Ben's 1982 928 S "restoration"

Hi guys !

I haven't been active on rennlist lately (understand : for the last 16months), but I'm back !

Last week, we (my parents and I) purchased our 3rd and most expensive stupid car !
First one was a 1991 Toyota 4 Runner with a high power 2.4TD (90hp...) and all the cool stuff to go offroading even though the most hardcore stuff we do is haul our mountain bikes around...
Then came the complete opposite, a 2001 jaguar XJR with a 375hp supercharged 4.0L V8 that rides like a limo and goes forward harder than my 986 S.
And now, we just bought our second 928 ! The first one was a 1987, with a GTS body kit, and in perfect condition. This one is a 1982 4.7S, that was used for classic cars rallies, and is in a poor shape...

It's got 150 000km, it's a 5speed manual with the weird shifter that rests between 4th and 5th. And unknown history. Car has sat for a while, then was used a bit, then sat again...
It's got the best potato cannon exhaust I've ever seen, and sounds crazy, though not as refined as a stock exhaust.

The whole interior is dirty, leather is tired, some switches are missing, and so on...

The body on the other, aside from mixing original wing and GTS style wing, and missing the front lip is in pretty good condition !

Now, before the photos, here is the biggest problem... it runs like complete crap !
If it puts out more than 150hp that would be the end of the world !
I'm a Porsche Technician, but I don't do classic cars, so this is a way for me to learn new stuff too.
Our Classic Tech told me that cars that sat for a while and express the symptoms I have often have a bad pressure accumulator.

The car takes a while to start when cold or when it sat for a few minutes, and once hot it's fine but it has no power.

I haven't started to investigate more than that by lack of time, but I plan to verify everything before buying any parts for the K-jet, given the price of such parts ...

I have around 3000€ to make it daily driveable again, including tires.
It's not a real restoration, more of a rehabilitation :)

Oh, and, I'm not a purist, some of you might want to look away :roflmao:

I'm probably going to tear the whole insterior, clean it and redo what needs to be redone.
I don't know about the sunroof yet ...

Nice. Sounds like you should know about how to get it running correctly. Accumulator might be causing poor starting, but I doubt it would be causing low power. I would start at follows:
-Check compression
-Check cam timing
-Check fuel system
-Fuel delivery to FD
-Control pressures
-Fuel out of injectors
Normally I don't buy major parts for the K jet, as you can rebuild the FD and WUR. Injectors sometimes need to be replaced but Benz units can be used that are inexpensive. Accumulators are sometimes hard to find these day.

looks sharp; LOVE the color. best of luck

I've never worked on a K-jetronic before, but I've been reading about it a lot since I bought it and it's not that complicated.
I'll start the diag soon, I have to fix the Jag's lights and the Toyota's leak before.

I'll probably check everything because I also want to get familiar with it, it'll be a big plus for me at work being able to work on those !

The timing belt needs to be replaced so I'll check timing when I do it.

I've seen a lot of rebuild kit for the fuel distributor, but not the warm up regulator (which, if I understand is just a fancy bimetallic pressure regulator ?) ?

One good thing is that the shift linkages are in good condition, I'll just replace the shifter's bushings. :)

I can't wait to start working on it ! The others cars are nice, but this is something else !

You don't need a rebuild kit for the WUR, as you can open it up, clean it out, and put it back together. There is an inlet screen on it which is sometimes impossible to get clean, in which case you can remove it, and then adjust the pressures by tapping the pressure value to move it in WUR assembly. Don't worry about that yet, though. There is a website somewhere (Delorean or Ferarri or something) that has lots of CIS parts. But what you are most likely to need are fuel pump, injectors, the filter in the inlet bung of the FD, and tons of patience. And the pressure gauge set.

Thanks guys !

Today I checked a few things.
First, the wheels are genuine, with a 965 part number and pressure sensors (even though the car doesn't have it).
Second, my pressure accumulator doesn't have the third fitting, so I guess that if it was bad, it would leak outside and since there is no sign of leaks, it's good !
Brakes are new (discs and pads), but someone just wrapped the wear sensor wires around the brake hoses...
Passenger seat had no power... I found the wire disconnected, I'll check if it's the problem.

The S4 wing is bolted through the tailgate... so if I want to put back an original foam wing... I would have to get the tailgate fixed :/

I'll check those links :) Thank you !

I started to work on it more seriously !

Here is the pressure accumulator, all dry, no third hose.
https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_5730.jpg

I started with the inside, I didn't want to tackle the engine yet...
https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_5731.jpg
https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_5733.jpg

I washed and treated the seats, but they still smell... So I put baking soda on them, we'll see if it can get rid of a bit of smell.
https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_5732.jpg

The passager seat wasn't going up and down, even when powering the motor directly, so I took it apart to check...

https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_5725.jpg
I cleaned everything, lubed it, and put it back together, works perfect now :)

The HVAC control panel was looking like crap... So I took it apart and cleaned it too.
https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_5727.jpg
After :
https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_5726.jpg

I removed the sticker around the HVAC knob, it was trash... I'll do a better one. I'm probably gonna make another knob too, I don't like that big sticky one... Same for the control knobs, they look dated.

Now, I have to take care of the center console, probably going to redo the fake leather on it, I juste have to decide which one. The original one smells, has marks, stains, and unglues from everywhere.
One part of the center console panel is broken, I'll try to 3D print a new one.

I still looked at the engine a bit.
https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_5724.jpg

Removed the air filter, and checked the metering plate.
I moves smoothly, but something feels weird, I don't remember the other K-jet I checked being like that.
When I pushed dont on it, then let go it goes back up smoothly and slowly, but if I push back on it, I feel like a clunk as if it's hitting something (the plunger on the other side I guess ?).
I'll take everything apart anyway...

Ben.

This is gonna be a great project for you. Other than perhaps, the timing belt/water pump/tensioner system the 928 does not really have any genetic weaknesses. Its just about attention to detail and a mechanic's touch. And controlling costs by not replacing things that can be repaired. Looks like you are on track. I would not postpone the drive train too long. Sometimes folks get really aggravated when the they get the interior and all the details sorted and then find out they need a transmission or head gaskets or something.

Ben006 12-24-2018 02:08 PM

After a month of not touching the car, I rolled it into the new garage and started working on it a bit !
Guess what I found...

https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_6111.jpg
Even though this is not the only problem, it certainly doesn't help !

The metering plate is dirty, but it's moving at least on the first 15%
https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_6112.jpg

I'll start with a new intake boot, and test it like that, see what it fixes, and go back from there.

No no... I haven't given up yet :D

I haven't had a lot of time to work on it lately...

I've decided to get rid of the K-jetronic and go EFI.
I'm way more familiar with those kind of systems, and I've always wanted to do an efi conversion... so, this is the right occasion !

I took out the K-jet assembly, cleaned it, everything looks fine.
How much do you think I can sell all this stuff for ?

https://i53.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_7223.jpg
I have more stuff still on the car, there's an ECU, the fuel pressure regulator etc ...

I'm discussing wether I keep the wheels grey, or go black ? I think the black wheels would go well with the brown mettalic paint :)

All the parts are coming together, I'm waiting to have everything before really starting to put my hands on it.

Looks like you have the skills for the job, but I pity any man who willingly starts a restoration on a CIS fuel system engine.

Good luck!

Ben006 03-15-2019 05:11 PM

Ahah, that's why I'm going full standalone EFI ! No K-jet headache !
This one works, but still, I don't want to mess with it... Especially since the engine might not stay stock in the future, I might as well make it ready for future mods now.

Ben006 03-17-2019 01:40 PM

This is where I am today :

https://i.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_7322.jpg
I had to cut off the belts because the accessories didn't move enough...
https://i.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_7321.jpg
The alternator is in pretty bad shape, I don't think it's rebuiladble, the collectors are wornout and all the electrical systems on the back are corroded.

And the bracket probably encountered the road at some point ^^
https://i.servimg.com/u/f53/13/27/76/86/img_7320.jpg

I'm going to remove the SAI pump and pipes. That will leave a free space on the crank pully to maybe fit the trigger wheel ?
We'll se !
Next step will be timing belt and water pump.

I've put up the K-jet for sale, but I still have no good idea of what it's worth...

jbrob007 03-17-2019 05:23 PM

Man, talk about a project! Good luck! My car is a 84 S2 with some obvious modifications and was a 5,000 piece project when I purchased it... Completely disassembled and just coming out of the paint booth. The previous owner had the rear S duckbill spoiler deleted, all the holes (there's a bunch) filled & smoothed, early OB model rear windows/trim installed (they're different), radio antennae delete, rear wiper delete, side markers delete and head light washer delete. The car has a radical after market wing (made specifically for the early S cars), but I'm thinking of putting an S4 style wing on the hatch. Leaving both the S duck bill spoiler and S4 style wings on the car looks like a hack job, but taking the "S" duck bill spoiler pieces off the hatch & both rear quarters is a lot of work and $$ - probably why their both still on your project car. If you decide to take off the S4 wing (easiest / cost effective option), then I may be interested in buying it if it's fiberglass (not hard rubber type). Let me know... Here's a pic:
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...eea606c8aa.jpg

Send me a PM if your interested. Again, good luck on the project... You've got your work cut out for you!

Joel
