My S4 was built in 09/86. How can I tell if it has the flip-up wing? The wing does not appear to flip, but I have not pulled up on it very hard.

Joel,
Look at the mounting legs on the wing. The non-folding wing is entirely black. On the folding wing, you can see a part of the metal hinge mechanism.
Regarding the piston squirter block, it's serial number is 81 H 6045.

Early S4 Block
Anyone got an earlier S4?
"Porsche eliminated them due to too much windage from oil splashing" - what would the symptoms be? Would I be able to notice higher oil consumption? Would engine temperature be more stable? (The guage never moves once warm whatever the weather)

Doug,
This has nothing to do with "delivering" the goods, does it?....what makes you think that I "have" to "prove" anything? What value does "proving" this to you do?
You can now claim to be have a slight bit more than humble knowledge.
So for you, a one time only reply:
1 product knowledge book MY87 - page 24 under lubrication section - here is when they were added
1a it is also noted in another factory booklet that has been "missing" here for about 6 months which lists the cracking pressure...
2 advanced technical knowledge, 1989, page 1-14, and here is where they were deleted and a generic statement that "it was not needed"....at engine no xxxxx0677. But dont count on it....it ended when porsche ran out of modified blocks......
3 the reason it was deleted came from a factory engineer
Gee, did this info really help...............NOT.

Hi,
Marc - are these really pieces of gratuitous mis-information or not ? Books missing - data without reference - I wonder! You only have to "prove" things Marc because you say them and others may dispute you!!
Otherwise simply don't make the statements!
The published "oil squirter" information from Porsche is/was as follows:
a) The operating pressure is 4bar
( Porsche 928S4 Service Information ‘87 - page 1.04 etc. Ref No. WKD493.421)
b ) As to your comment mentioned above "A very limited number.............
Well these are the Engine Numbers ( series ) for MY87;
M82/41 - 81H 00001-01000 - Manual
M82/42 - 81H 05001-10000 - Auto
And they supposedly all had oil squirters - (comments by DH)
( Porsche 928S4 Service Information ‘87 - page 0.11 etc. Ref No. WKD493.421)
As far as I can ascertain Porsche perhaps carried them on until ceasing production of the 5ltr motor and perhaps even the GTS had them too!
Now Marc, if you have other information that contradicts this such as later Service Bulletins etc. then you are somewhat obligated to TO ALL OF US provide it here FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL and to list the confirmation source as well. So we can all learn and seperate fact from fable too!
You are a RENNLIST sponsor, you make the statements as "facts" and you should be able to back them up otherwise your credibility is at risk
You are good at firing shots as I recall when others disagree with you but the 'facts' of your statements sometimes get lost in telling the fable
Like you trying to check oil pressure on a 928 engine with a gauge that only reads to 100psi !!!
For me Marc I do not purport to being an "expert" let alone on the 928!
Regards

Does someone have a pic of what it WOULD be like to have these squirters?
My concern is that windage is ALREADY a problem on these blocks, and blasting oil at the pistons will only increase it.

Brendan in the other thread, the squirters were posted. Someone posted 2 pics, one from the Fac Mans I think. Looking down into the bottom of the bores you see a skirt on either side (only 2) with little holes pointed upwards into the bore. This is from memory. Agreed on windage!!! And agreed with Marc that dry-sumping would seem to be the only real winning accompaniment to these squirters. I have '87man VIN 1401 with no flipwing and the ex has 1385 with flip. I would hesitate to correlate the wing with the squirters. But my 1401 has relatively high HP/TQ compared to other locals, and it has severe oil misting under high revs OR high G.

Doug,
Again, for the hard of hearing:
1 1987 Product Knowledge Workbook, pg. 25, under Lubrication
1a you got me on the cracking pressure...so much for memory
2 Advanced Technical Information..yes, it is a Porsche "book", page 1-14, noting the ending of modified crankcases as of January 14, 1987.........engine number #81H00677
These are FACTS *** represented by the factory.......you can believe that the GTS has oil squirters all you want....and the tooth fairy, and the horsepower fairy too.....best of luck.
What are you talking about with oil pressure???
End of discussion.
