Yea me too Tony! Half my posts (to this and other lists) include links to your site, so please don't stop adding new procedures with those excellent clear pics you always take.

Looking at Tony's photos note that only the inner most channels carry pressurized oil . The outer channel is a DRAIN in the early designs Porsche had trouble sealing the lower cradle to the block and were having OIL Leaks , seepage along the seam ...SO they added an outer channel to collect the bit of seepage and drop it back into the engine . IT still may weep a bit of oil BUT not on the ground . The previous discussion about the shop in Germany which had " tried the accusump " for a 928 racecar ended with the offer to "modify" the oiling path in the lower cradle ....for a fee ...indicates that perhaps the oiling path could be improved . As usual I have more questions than answers ...............

Reading your posts is like reading the several excellent Porsche books I've been reading. Yes the second passage was added as a clever way to catch seepage and yes the placement of the passage in the cradle was revolutionary. And again yes, the guy who offers to modify the cradle does raise the question of improvements there .. however, if oil is misted and vented out at the same time that oil is slushed by the crank at the same time that oil is forced out of the sump ..... hehe .... we're still toast. A dry pickup is a dry pickup, regardless of how cool our passages are. Gimme a D -- R -- Y -- S -- U -- M -- P.

Heinrich , I confess I too have read the books , the manuals , the tech bulletins and am fortunate to have piles of parts that I can examine . When I wanted to know what happens inside a fan clutch I took one apart , aluminium ball joint carrier took it apart , belt tensioner took it apart .......... differences in suspension for S-4 ...... , torque tube ..............how much the floor and firewall weighs ? cut one out of a car . But you are correct about the DRYSUMP every modern racecar is dry sumped unless the rules do not allow it . The 996 "911" is a wetsump engine unless it is a racecar then guess what they go back to the tried and true .......DRYSUMP ....the early 996 "cup cars" blew too many engines . The Boxster and 996 street cars IF you track them it is supposed to void the warranty !!

you have got to be joking, that is stupid, what happens to those who drive hard enough on the street to do track like damage, and how are they supposed to prove that you ever tracked it?

Liz ....how about reading the track results in the Porsche club magazines ?? Nice photo's of XXX"S 996 "on the track" and in spite of what you may think it is really not possible to drive as hard on the street as they do on a race track .....But Porsche has replaced a lot of Boxster engines !!

Porsche in the 88 Information technik book wkd 494 421 states " bores for piston crown cooling have been omitted in the upper crankcase section since January of 1987 because of positive endurance testing results . Oil spray jets , which had been pressed into the main bearing seats are therefore also omitted. " That is interesting I wonder why they added them to the 1987 S-4 engine in the first place ? What were they trying to " fix "

Doug you are welcome , I never thought sharing knowledge and information was something to be avoided . Seems a bit like hoarding money ....only when you spend it does it do any good . But then again , Maybe it is hard it spend if you only have a few pennies ...................

Has anybody got anymore numbers to add to this list of squirters and non squirters? From what we know the blocks that are squirters are M28/42
81H05411 upto 81HO6276 and all the ones with numbers less than that. These are of course all auto blocks. We also know that 81HO7848 was not a squirter. Can somebody fill in any of the blanks please???? I have the opportunity to buy 81H06851 and don't know what it will be? A lottery for sure.

Many thanks

I guessing there is a reasonably high probability that my 87 auto with flip up wing has these. I seam to recall reading somewhere that the last four digits on the VIN related to the build or sequence number and mine is 0870. Looks like I’ll have to locate tag on the block to know for sure, but after reading this thread, I’m still confused. Are oil squirters considered a good thing or a bad thing or is the jury still out?

If you have a flip-wing it is highly likely you have the squirters, because I have an engine with squirters and it didn't come with the flip-wing, which means that all flip-wing cars *likely* had the squirters.
