forget the AM intake project entirely, just use it as an "interesting benchmark" but put the saw down.

if you need another 944S2 intake(s) for experimenting, I have a spare one for $150 shipped,. or ill send you two of them for $300 shipped.
also, bear in mind the 944S2 intake ports are a little larger than 928S4. so either you'll want to blend the S4 intake ports, or fill in the runners a little.
as long as the runner mates up to the heads like the S4 intake, it will work and probably be better. there is already curve to the middle to help with the more narrow AMV8 runner config.and their mating.
i dont think blending two 944S2 runner sets with a plennum makes any less work in fact, that seems like a mini nightmare. ill leave that kind of fabbing to the Carls and Gregs of the world.
it looks like it will fit backward fine. just need to nail down the TB and MAF connections, but first need to get the system welded up to fit the engine jig.
thanks for the offer. let me see what this looks like when i lap off the plenum off the 944 intake and see how it measures up to the AM intake with its legs cut off .

Therefore, this is no debate in_this_thread.

On that note.
Yesterday in my automatic 87 I found myself behind a slow truck on an uphill cloverleaf leading to the highway (70mph speed limit). You can see oncoming traffic you'll be merging with long before you reach that point. Coast was clear, zero oncoming traffic. I manually dropped it into 2nd, RPM's settled at 3,800rpm.
At the top of the hill I merged to the far left lane, ran it to 6,000rpm, popped it into drive and away I went.

Guess I'm one of those rare fellows that runs my engines past 4k RPM
yep, its not really about street, its about raw acceleration capability. anyone that doesnt want to downshift to the 4000rpm range, is just being lazy or doesnt understand what we have been talking about for over 20 years now here! . It takes power to accelerate, and the more you have , the more you can.

Kind of like a 32v spider then.

What is the inside-diameter of the 944 runners?

No to derail the intake idea... but was the spider intake really 'bad'? It had plenty of runner length (that is if you got the Euro).

I have my opinions which should be tested this winter.

US & Euro are darn close to the same length, the inside diameter is different.
Plenum is also the same size, with a larger TB opening for the Euro.

yes similar in idea to the *16v* spider, but in my head i was picturing something more "subaru"
runners IIRC are like 48x40mm "sort of rectangles". they are the same height/width as 928S4 but are larger/more "squared off" than the round/oval S4 ports.

Default Straight runners

I think that it’s really important for making power (normally aspirated) to keep the intake runners as straight as possible. Straight runners can have small inside diameter without drag and pressure drop. Small inside diameter runners give high VE because of high velocity. Getting exactly the right length for the runners is much less important than straight and small inside diameter in the 4000-7000 rpm range.

How tall is the AM at the top-front and top-back of the plenum?

Stock is roughly 6 and 8 inches.
the rear front of the AM plennum is exactly 8". here are the pictures of the intake on the JIG .

what is the distance between port centers (yellow below)...
a lot of lateral to cover in 3" vertical.

Yikes. That is going to be a long runner for what I assume is #8 if you intend to cut the legs off the AM.

That is quite a bit off.

It looks like the AM needs to be cut apart in quarters, each runner mated/matched to the heads, and then patch/weld it all together again.

How does the width from one cylinder bank to the other match up? Short? Long?

ineresting. what if we just adapted a euro runner, TB, Plennum for this project. i wonder if it would work. actually, based on what we have seen out of the 5 liter 2 valvers, it seems to be on par with the S4, so probably not a game changer.

actually, the shape and bell mouth inlet is more important to flow. the AMV8 is a work of art in this area and im sure very effective. dont know how the spreading out of the legs of the intake will effect flow. i suspect, if it is done corectly , not much

After looking at the angles, the outside runners will be a little longer . It looks near the angle that the 944S2 pinches down to. it needs to move about .75" on both sides. the middle ports are almost aligned . not much change there and the width side to side , center to center is the same , all most identical

Why do you think that? And even if it’s true, making the inlets flow well enough is so easy compared to making straight runners that you don’t need AM intake for that.

When this idea first popped up I thought that was the plan, section it apart so each runner is perfectly aligned with each port & fill in the gaps....

Pretty much.

Some people ski or run around on snowmobiles (if there's snow).

Some people drink. Some people drink a lot (Wisconsin has 7 of the top 10 "drunk cities").

Some people do interesting things to their cars. It's easy to get waaaayyy deep into a car project when you don't drive the car for several months.

........many times the drinking leads to these projects.
