Metal or paper intake gaskets for S3?
Hello Gentlemen,
I have a simple, yet possibly loaded question for you:
Which are better gaskets for the S3 intake pipes, the original metal or the later replacement paper?
I ask because I just found out that the metal ones are still available. They are expensive as sh*t! $83.00. Each. Full set of four is $332.00.
I guess what I am looking for is, are the metal gaskets $300 superior to the paper gaskets?
Thanks!

The paper gaskets on my 81's intake are still going strong after 37 years. Hell, the head gaskets only went recently and those are paper as well.
I'm sure the paper will be fine in the long run instead of the metal ones.

Hi Seth,
I used the paper ones supplied by Roger for two of the S3's I've owned and no trouble at all. I checked for leaks as well and nada. They'll be fine.

You will be fine with paper Seth.
I converted several years ago.
The metal ones look fantastic though.
Check your surfaces on a mirror though, S3 is problematic sometimes that way.

Ah. Thanks, guys!
I already have a set of paper intake gaskets, so I will go with them. I will put the intended $300+ towards the tensioner refurbish and cam cover reseal project.
Since we are here, for those of you who have used the paper gaskets, did you install them dry, or use any kind of sealant?
I am going to check the flatness of the mating surfaces of the intake pipes before I assemble them.
Thanks!

The paper gaskets, since they are compressible, tend to pull the corners down where the hardware is, so if you take an engine apart that had paper, you need to be very dilligent about checking manifold flatness.
The metal gasket didn't/don't "warp" the manifolds as badly....I still check them for flatness, however.
Dry assembly.

That makes sense.
The Red Witch had metal gaskets from the intake refresh some 20 years ago.
Hopefully there won't be much distortion of the flanges.
I am still going to check.
I will install the paper gaskets dry.
Thanks!
