Is this doable at home or would you need to send in the DME to do the install? also if you need a test mule???

There are a few solder connections and some testing and calibration steps required. Because of this, DME would need to be sent in for the upgrade.

Default Update To OBD Project

Its been a while and I wanted to catch everyone up on the latest progress:

New “SPORT” DME
You may have heard that I replaced my 944 NA and 944 Turbo standard DME’s with the new “SPORT” DME. The OBD module was the main driver behind this update, I added some provisions and refinements to better support it. However, I also added new features that are more performance oriented like switches for 24/28 EEPROM and Turbo/NA modes. Basically, the SPORT DME will work on any 944 or 951 by just changing out the program and setting a couple of switches.

Mark II OBD Module Electronics
I updated the OBD Module design with many new refinements. I realized that many guys have MAF upgrades, so I added provisions to support reading these sensors. I also added LEDs for all the different supply voltages (there are 5 of them), some experimental features like an “at a glance” flywheel sensor status and Tx/Rx data.

Software/Firmware
Still nothing interesting to show on the software front, all the code so far it just boring foundational stuff. However, I am getting close to reading out the analog sensors and displaying values. I hopefully will have something to show on my next update.

Here are updated pictures of the new SPORT DME and prototype OBD Module:

I hope to have a product available with basic features by the end of this year. This will be a incremental roll out with new software features and enhancements available for free download regularly.

Pretty cool. I'd be interested in having my F9T DME fitted with the upgrade. I haven't even installed it in the car yet. Keep us posted.

you should include a "kill switch" in the DME that automatically fries any AFM the user installs, thereby forcing them to convert to a MAF and come out of the 11th century and into the light of throttle response, torque, and accurate AFR metering.

What would be awesome is a digital FQS. So you could change the setting via bluetooth. It would be nice to test different settings without tearing into the passengers footwell every time. Perhaps the obd board could bypass the physical switch to allow this?

I've got one fitted to mine, the red one in the centre console! which kills the Ignition and Engine! The AFM works great (throttle response / torque etc..) and hasn't missed a beat in 5 years, approx. 5000 miles, 5 Trackdays and 3 (2) hour endurance races...

I had the exact same idea! The electronics to support this are already implemented in Mark III hardware, I will describe exactly how it will function in my next progress update.

I completely empathize with this statement; we will see what the future brings...

And any chance of offering it for 16v engines?
