For the record, the brown thing stuck on the metal is the old glue and insulation bits. After you glue the new carpet on its going to be the same underneath.
You could clean and fiberglass that hole shut instead of welding.

I did "rust converter" and JB WELD on my battery holes. Then sealed it all with undercoating. A LOT of undercoating. I'm betting on it being good for another 25 years.
An idea Noah, once you get the floorboards primered, hit the whole thing with undercoating. It will do two things. One it will keep moisture from getting back in there, two it will seal the glue and anything left on the metal so you will never have a wiff of what's left.
Oh, and 3, it could help a tiny bit with sound deadening.
Here's a pic of 2 worst areas of body damage on the exterior.
I figure I can also throw carpet over it in the future, but in the meantime the mold is dead since I applied a urethane pickup truck box liner to the interior last night. F*CK YOU!
If I had seen this thread before tonight, I would have recommended wiping down the interior with bleach. Bleach kills EVERYTHING. Mold, viruses, fungi, bacteria..it kills it ALL. Just wear rubber gloves when applying it so it doesn't come into contact with any open wounds. .02 cents.
I don't know..but it will suck the color out of most cotton materials. For that I would use some type of the color-fast bleaches that are on the market. Talk to your wife. She probably knows what to look for and might use something like this on your clothing. Girls know this kinda stuff.
Had to be VERY delicate with the headliner like Morghen suggested. It's never been off in nearly 40 years & it's kind of brittle in areas. But it's off. Some light surface rust & moldy looking foam but overal things looked quite good. I struggled at first with the idea of taking the headliner off & my dear ol' dad said "don't" ... but I gotta do what I gotta do.
The left fender is dented & rusty but no holes!! Tonight brings favour to Gramps & me. I'm happy! I guess at this stage I expect the very worst and anything less than that is a blessing.
I want to preserve this car for many many years to come & I know if I leave this fender to the elements, it's have holes in in in 1 or 2 years time.
Seal it properly or get another one...but be aware that early ones without the indicator hole are rare and hard to find...so dont jump to tossing the old one...as repairing the old one is the same as welding a newer one's indicator hole...minus the money spent for the new fender ofcourse
Big financial hit today but I still think I did the right thing. $1000 worth of body shop supplies including paint & primer. WOW. I budgeted $400-$500. Bought Porsche L97A silver paint just like the factory made this car. But the paint was mixed and the person gave me such excellent customer service I couldn't go back. I spent the extra green for 2 stage paint. I want Gramps to shine up real nice!
The continued on disassembly.
My goal is to have Gramps painted by next weekend. This is kind of "restoration-race" that I did not plan on, but I figure I'm half way towards a paint job with the interior stuff removed... Plus if I don't deal with the surface rust, then it'll get much worse in one or two years of driving in the winter & rain, better to suffer now but be comfortable knowing the metal is sealed.
Disassembled both doors & both doors need to be welded in 2 places.
