Logically maybe. But you forgot one thing. Just like the 944 guys forgot. Just like the late 924 with the 5 lugs hub guys forget... all the other 4 poppers are just variations of the theme.

GRAMPS is the original article, 4 speed & 4 lugs & rear drums. In 2 years old he'll be 40. All you kids get outta the road... Gramps is coming through.

Newer can be better sure. But in terms of COOL. Just being an OLD CAR is cool. And your 951 and 968 & 944 cars will NEVER beat Gramps at that game. And that is why I don't want to update the car; try to make him something is isn't. If he was a basket case, then fine, but he's becoming pretty amazing actually.

My Dad couldn't figure out why the 924 vs the mighty 944... then he got it when watching Jeremy Clark in an episode about new Mercedes vs his favourite 60's SL Mercedes... he said "it's not a race car. Nor does it have all of the luxury features of the new model... but it's my favorite because of how I feel when driving the classic car. I really enjoy driving it."

So here's a lovely (na, I think) 924 being piloted very nicely on a road.

And 3 more pics of Gramps finally getting a wash. Good for the soul.

Well, here we are. Darn this engine is lovely. Was able to remove the head by hand with the headers & cam & some other bits still attached. I suspect a person (or people) could remove the head with the intake manifold attached and exhaust manifold still attached.

I found several wiring things that need repairing. Plus this engine deserves proper intake manifold gaskets. The cylinder bores look good. Bump-stick (camshaft) looks good.

Ok, if I didn't mention it before, I'll say it now:
the 924 2.0l is different car than the 944. The differences I will describe at a later date when I get to know the car better.

Is it simpler? Yes, I can say that much.

Here is a close up at the components at the back of the head. The oil pressure switch and I *think* the coolant temp sender.

I am suspecting this block was a "swap in" at some point. the heater is not a a/c climate control system, yet the block has what I suspect is a a/c compressor mount. Needless to say it will not be going back on.

Originally my plan was to get in, swap head gasket & get out. Remember, this car hasn't proven itself to me yet. It owes me buster!

...but, c'mon noah. Make it better. You know ol' Gramps will be a shining example one day. It starts with you. It is your baby now. Time to make the right choice...

So I spent a fair amount of time today scraping and scrubbing the block with a "spray nine" and dish soap solution. Old school. Yes it is time consuming, but it'll get the job done.

The lifters are in great shape as is the cam shaft. Unfortunately 1 small 6mm bolt is broken in the head, perhaps for igniton wire bracket (a recent break it looks like, dunno what it's for, but I will attempt to remove it), also I am missing the 2 alignment dowels for head to block. ARE THESE A REQUIREMENT?

When you install the camshaft make sure you dont overtighten the nuts/bolts that hold it to the head, thats a BIG mistake some do...those are just M6 bolts threading into aluminium, they should be tightened with about 1kgf but please look it up in the Haynes.

Beauty beneath the rough surface. A little time, a little work... a lot of love sets the stage for Gramp's Rebirth.

Did you do a compression test before? rings ok?
Take the head to a machine shop for a refresh? new valve seals and guides is probably a good idea as well as a good valve seating.

Big M,

Your suggestion are sound for sure. I thought of doing a compression test. But then forgot to before ripping Grams apart. The engine starts, runs great, sounds & idles very good. No blue smoke on "throttle snapping".

I don't want to do a full rebuild at this point. Fingers crossed.

*** kind of hoping to have a little LUCK come my way ***

I have a time sensitive arrangement with my insurance company. This head gasket was super bad timing. My main concern is the brake pedal almost hitting the floor before stopping the car. Booster seems to work & the front tires grab the pavement. Bad brakes are my #1 concern. I have like a week to get this car in safe condition in order to pass insurance. Did not budget time to play with engine mishaps.

You could have left the headgasket for later i dont think it would have hurt if you would have driven it gently. But hey you can do it again later if you wish as its such a cheap job and fairly quick to do as well.

Ask Kenodog from 924board for parts if the brakes are bad. I have never heard of such a failure in brakes so i have no idea why it would do that.

no worries, there is so much knowledge on the 924board you literally cant go wrong with any 924, being it the simplest 924 NA or the most special GTR...there are members there who own one of them and the brotherhood of the 924 will never let anyone stranded
We have the cars, we have the knowledge, we have the parts.
