Who made them for Porsche, and would they be willing to do a run of them now?

JMG Shop in England used to offer a rebuild service using improved bearings if you supplied a core. Might be worth contacting them as they charge under $200 and shipping across the pond shouldn’t be much for a steering shaft.

you can "roll your own" using Borgeson parts and come in under $200 as well.

"What?! Are you crazy? This is a steering shaft we're talking about! You must have death wish! Is Summit indemnified against legal road use?!" <- My squid MAGfag impression. Still waiting for that name, squid coward...

For the dictionary definition of, “triggered” (are people still using that word? I guess old people on the internet still are?), see Magfag’s posts here: https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...l#post15660271

It's just a straight shaft with U Joints on it.
It's not heavily loaded.
It IS an important piece, but i wouldn't hesitate to make my own when I need to.
BMW E36 has aluminum U joints in theirs, splined on both ends. I'll bet every ZF rack has the same splines...

nope. for whatever reason there's a huge variety of spline type/count.

944 uses 11/16-40 like VW Rabbit.

The bearings are available separately,. Getting the joints apart without damaging the yokes requires some careful work. For situations where you have a manual rack, but no intermediate shaft, I'd have a custom shaft to be fitted to your yokes. I was going to go that route until I happened across the correct shaft for sale on E-Bay.

I agree that 11/16-40 is the accepted size used when sourcing aftermarket fittings, but I wonder if this is an approximation of the actual size, which should be metric, shouldn't it?

you would think, but remember for most of the 20th century US equipment and products dominated the world of manufacturing.
a lot of stuff is spec'd in inches and just converted "approximately" to metric for the ROW to understand.

AC fittings, all types of rubber hose, timing belts are all SAE/inch.
hell, i have an original VOLVO 740 radiator in my garage and the trans cooler fittings are 1/2"-20 UNF.
but the 740 turbo's original engine oil cooler uses 1/2" british pipe fittings...
