I hate the arguments: "You could get X for the same or less money" - who cares? You could make that same argument for any car. On that same mentality it's less than a new Kia....which would you rather have? I'll take the 924 over the Kia.
I think the 924 is the hidden gem of the Porsche world for people not caught up in the status of some other model. Lighter and simpler than the equivalent 944.....I've always seen the 924 (any version) the big brother to cars like the Subaru BRZ.
Offer him $6,500 and see what happens.

That last one is probably the best, one of the lowest mile 924S's on the planet. Sometimes the cream of the crop can attract ridiculous prices. I'll admit I'd probably pay 10k for that if all the rubber was in new condition and it drove like new as advertised. I'd rather buy that than a 2013 Civic or something for sure, lol.

Race cars are different. They're experimental and they aren't necessarily what the manufacturer built. You're maybe a little safer building a car to a Porsche Motorsports specification (e.g. the 924 GTS/R) but its' still risky, the buyer needs to trust you really did it. Receipts can help. But if you decide to run off into the weeds you can spend a lot of money and have nothing to show for it but trophies (if you're good) and honestly, unless you're a famous driver that's not going to help either.
Build a 944 Firehawk replica and race it, there's where you get payback. Not in the market. Most folks in that game like building their own cars, but you and I both know you can buy a race car for less than half what it costs to build one.

Why not look for one from the 70's?
I know I mentioned already that taking a stock car far from production didn't always work, and this might be an example, but you need to consider that the only factory built 916 ever imported to the US is currently on the market for $495,000. This isn't an example of a spec 916 by any stretch of the imagination, but the seller appears to think it may have some value over and above the cost of parts:

Forgetting it's a little on the pug ugly side (paint) and it isn't a 914-6 anymore, it is expensive?
As far as I can tell from the description this is a replica of a 916 without the front and rear bumper bodywork. It isn't a stock 914-6, it's a GT build based on a 914-6 chassis. The steel 916 flairs have been added, the engine isn't the 2.4L 911S that was put in the factory 916. It is in fact a homebrewed street legal hybrid. And the owner is asking a lousy $85K for it, as compared to ~$500K for the real deal.
My bet is this car probably outperforms the Porsche Motorsports 916. Is the seller asking too much money? Until you've driven this car you won't ever know, but based on my experience, he isn't

I'm thinking about signing up for the Laguna Seca GGR PCA meet this season? I may not have the money, and I've promissed to never track the 928 again, but it might be worth it just for the fun If we didn't live on different coasts I'm pretty sure I'd appreciate hearing your 944 mod experiences in great detail over several beverages ...

the surf was heavy yesterday and today.....
reminded me of a lot of epic surf days I stole from Mainland Mex over the years....
and i only damn near died once.
it was a day in the spring of 2005 at this epic secret spot called Venenos on Joaquin Escobar's Ranch, 8 miles north of the Tropic of Cancer in the middle of knowwhere....
rising swell jacked to giant proportions and I was taking 20 wave sets and 25 feet of whitewater on the head with no safe harbor....
just a no-longer visible narrow channel in between two horrible boneyards.
somehow managed to find it after getting pounded within an inch of my life as darkness descended.
this one will give you an idea of what the big southern hemi swells do when they slam in (south of the border)....
happened yesterday, a few waves for the ages... somewhere in Mainland Mex.....
