Karl, the torque tube is the saving grace of the 924/944/968.
I'm only aware of 2 Rennlisters that have suffered fatal injuries in a crash.
1 was a 944 driver who died when his car caught fire at Daytona and for some reason his fire suppression system failed (a few years ago).
2. the other, a Rennlister who killed his buddy in his 968 due to reckless driving.
the torque tube acts similar to a partial space frame in that it preserves the integrity of the unibody and diminishes the engine compartments' likelihood of crushing in on the cabin area.
properly driven, our cars are actually very safe for preventing crashes.
and in a considerable crash, not see loss of life.

well the situation is really not so bad...
you'll get the n/a and just thirst for more power... you'll want the performance of a 944T.
then, you'll get 300 hp to the wheels and still be wanting more power.
so, you go out and do a big turbo build for $30,000 and dial up...
and you'll discover it's only about then, when you're near 400 hp to the wheels that the car begins
to feel like it has enough power.
so, this is why I keep the drumbeat for the cheap junkyard truck motor and engine swap.
not easy up front, but the payoff down the road is huge.
now you have the performance of a well-tuned turbo, without the bull****.
it takes a good y-pipe, resonator and muffler to make it all work and the V8 sound good...
i'll have over $80 k in my car by the end of the spring....
and despite that I have been able to make this modest investment,
I still don't believe I'm wealthy enough to drive a 944T with even a mild hp increase/tune
for the 30 k miles/year that I need out of my car.
so what would I do if I were you,
I'd get the nicest 944 I could find, and enjoy the stock engine while stocking up on v8 swap parts...
and then attempt to recognize when the laws of diminished returns had officially set in.
and then, get out of the Porsche money pit motor and never look back.
swap in the used truck motor and enjoy the car for the rest of your life.

Karl, seriously, don't give up. If you read this, keep trying to get the 944. Give it a few days, or until your mom cools off. Be persistent. If you are persistent now, you will have shown to yourself that you can brave a 944 challenge. Anyone really can own a 944. Anyone can drive one, and fixing them is actually just twisting nuts and bolts, one by one. So take these obstacles one by one, and keep thinking about accomplishments. Imagine when you're in your own 944, the red '83, shifting through 2nd...3rd...

Wow, didnt see this coming. I mean in one week we went from referring to the uncles 944 as "My 944" to browsing the local CL for 944s with asking prices above budget to "should I get a 944 S or a Turbo" to planning a 2000 mile 944-shopping trip to CA next summer to settling for a closer one way below budget only to have mom say no.

a fair measure of I have to have it now vs I'm drawing up a game plan and will follow the plan, cuz I'm in this for the long haul.... seems to come and go with Karl's numerous mood swings.
despite having very little money and mom calling the shots, he feels completely entitled to his own '80s yuppie junior supercar. I like that.... and admire that he has a goal and is willing to learn and work towards reaching that goal... but the kid needs to grow up a little and be patient.
he also needs to sit his mom down and explain to her that an n/a 944 isn't much faster than your typical Ford Taurus, and that the car, and much like that typical Taurus, has the benefit of being very unlikely to kill it's driver in the event of a crash.
there's no whining and crying in 944 until you've blown your first headgasket, or clutch, or you're quite sure you've bent the valves.
whining and crying before you even pick up one of the cars? come on man.
really, been to Florida?

Good morning everyone.(well it's good morning for me)
My Dad just woke me up to tell me that summer 944 trip is still on with a new idea in mind: to not tell her again about the car. Plan the trip to Cali and get the car at the last minute without her realizing it. That way, she can't stop us if we're already to buy one(I think this is similar to what someone mentioned yesterday, essentially buying the car behind her back)
And od I get it I was wrong. I was again getting annoyed with the "Karl isn't serious" or "Karl is a troll" again because it seems that you guys only do it to me and no one else regardless of all of the stuff I've shown you that's mine. I've been to Florida by the way.
That's all the news I've got for now, hearing it from my dad, he's still serious about this.
