Default Opinion on Wheel width and weight

I have a early 85 944. So that means it is an NA. Currently it has 205/55/17 tires in the front on 17x7.5 rims and the rear is 245/45/17 tires on 17x9 rims I do not have an LSD but do have some upgrades done to the engine. Na-tune, fidanzza flywheel, underdrive Alternator pulley, No PS or Ac, Bursch headers with 2.5" cat back, and an electric water pump conversion. My engine revs pretty quickly but I was wondering on some opinions of what other people run on tire size. As that is going to be my next upgrade as I switch to focusing on the suspension. I can make my car come loose in the rear in 3rd gear in turns but also sometimes will get a understeer effect as well (smaller front tire width).

The options are:

Keep current rims and just upgrade tires
Buy 16x8 rims and run 225/50 (rims would weigh 10ish pounds each) with adaptors
Buy 16x8 front and 16x10.5 Gotti wheels

Talking to some other local 944 owners a square set up seems to be the most fun for the 944. Although I want this thing to stick to the road.

On the 17's I run 225-45 front and 255-40 rear, 968 M030 sways and 300/450 springs. On the 16's I'm square, 200/300 springs. I'm happy with both set-ups, but that's my driving style.

I think, the deciding factor is going to be, pictures of each wheel option

Desmond Regamaster I had a pair before that were 15x7 and they weight 8 pounds. The only sad thing is I would have to run a wheel adapter to make them fit the 944.

I run '86 Turbo Phone Dials (16", early offset) with 245/50/16 front, 255/50/16 rear, car is lowered 1" all the way around. No spacers, no adapters

sad, every couple of years it seems there are fewer and fewer tire options for 16" wheels.

but I think they're good for snow tires.

I like a 25.5~.75" diameter tire. gets your gps a bit closer to the speedo.

245~255-35-18 front, 265~285-35-18 rear.

I think tire selection alone is worth ditching 16" rims. I'm a turbo phoney diehard and I even made the switch to 18's so I could get some quality tires.

This. I'm not sure what on earth is available for a 16x10.5 wheel anymore! Besides a track tire.

Also, 8" and 10.5" is going to be a very tight fit. I don't think its possible in the front with stock struts, perhaps with some careful offset calculations.

Don't use adapters. But that's me.

Take care,

Unless you want/need new rims, I would follow Mike's recommendation and mount 225/45s in the front and 255/40s in the rear...and call it a day.

If you wanted square you can get away with 235/45 all around - this will allow you to rotate the tires. It has been done, 235 isn't much of a stretch on 9's.

That's impressive for a wheel to be so light.
What kind of 17s do you have? I might want them depending on type/condition.
