Default 1984 944 top speed

I was at an auto parts store yesterday and seen this awful looking spray can job yellow NA 944. I was just making conversation adn he told me it could do 160mpg...... Then one of the guys that work there was like "yeah I seen it I was in the car". I just cant see this. What is top speed? Also what years had the 85mpg speedo?

Car and Driver tested it when they came out and found it to be 137 MPH.

The 8 valve cars topped out in fourth gear. Fifth was specifically for economy. I was told that by a factory trained Porsche mechanic.

Remember being a kid (as I do in the 1950's and 1960's) and seeing those speedos with 120 or more on it - WOW.

Then in the 1970's when I started driving for real - uhhh it wastn too long before we got 55 mph !!! We were going that fast on our motorcycles - in the dirt - in third!!

I remember driving some of the older guys at maybe 60 -65 or so in the car and they would say " Son, you got to slow down. You givin' me the vertigo."

For 160 in it he better have a real long steep downhill, and some juice in it too. It gives me "the vertigo" thinking about it.

4th gear on an NA tops out around 125 IIRC, you have to hit 5th to go all the way...

or so I've heard...

With my 951 gearbox it is possible to do 140 in 4th though.

Rated topspeed was 130, that magazine said 137, I'd believe 140 with a tailwind or slight hill. In an 86 one time going down a long straight hill the speedo read like 150 or so which is probably closer to 140.

If you want the 85mph speedo I have one in a gauge set I'll sell you for $50

Maybe he was on the back of a flat bed truck that had NOS?
or has one of those "turbo whistles" and is good for 20-30 miles an hour at top end too.
Or he could have just bumped his head.....hard

His speedometer is probably just off by 30mph at top speed. I know mine is off by at least 5-10mph at highway speeds.

Anybody want to buy a well sort out, pristine, low mileage 93/968,what the use of having a DOC 3.0 LTR Variocam with all kind of gimmicks add to it,when I can go buy an 84-944 NA that will achieve the same top speed .I'm loosing money here.Seriously early 944 -2.5 NA (top speed 137 mph / 0-60 -7.4 sec.).The 2.7 will hit close to 145 mph that I know for fact.
