I like the idea. What I would try and do is get rid of those two bumps on the side and make them more flat. So the car overall would look like a coupe more than a hatchback. I have always thought what would look good.

I think that'd be an easy/subtle change in the look that might look factory if done subtly enough

try to imagine a smallish one that extends just as far as the rear bumper. (not the yellow lines; the lines of the car that the yellow lines are pointing at)

did someone try to photoshop this?
i would love to see the result!

Thread from the dead!

Might as well toss in my 2 cents since it's been brought back.

I think what dates the rear hatch is the box form that it follows. If it tapered in at the back it would not only modernize the car, it would give it a more aggressive stance by widening and very slightly raising the rear arches.

Here is my crappy 10 minute photochop of what I'm talking about. Note that the rear-most part of the hatch and wing have not moved, just tapered in, and the arches are brought in and up to meet it. The B pillar had to be slightly widened at the base as well to slant that edge of the rear window back a touch to keep the lines flowing.

This would obviously take an insane amount of work and skill to build but would look pretty cool. Someone should build it...

Agree completely... You are describing lines of other modern Porsches, Nissan 370... it's a great look. I suspect the utility will be slightly hampered. I like your proposal however.

the most-dating feature on the 944 IMO is the taillight design.
VW vans and box-car volvos used the same design.
come up with a more modern looking taillight and watch your car travel through time.

the separate-piece rear bumper is old-fashioned too but even with the US spec pads isn't all that bad looking.

I have thought that a modern fill piece between the tail lights and an integrated license plate holder would look cool. The lighted center pieces are cool but dated as well, I just thought a carbon fiber or perforated metal piece with a modern license plate mounting system, maybe recessed could bring life into the rear as I think actually the separated tail lights is kind of contemporary again, but the center with the license plate looks unfinished or something on a cheap import kind of car. The 968 had a piece with the Porsche script that looked better. Some of the new Ford trucks have a real cool grill that is black and perforated that I think might have qualities that would look good between the tail lights. Obviously a personal opinion.

Not one of the designs shown in this thread would be as aerodynamically efficient as the stock configuration. If the weight of the OEM design is a problem, perhaps a thinner piece of glazing with internal reinforcement would save significant weight.

The rear OEM spoiler could probably stand some improvement, but not much.

Ecomoder.com website has considerable information on aero improvements. Also read Hucho's book on aerodynamics of road vehicles.

If seeking aerodynamic and aesthetic improvements, look to the face and underside of these cars, as well as replacement of the flag mirrors and spoked wheels, both of which are way too draggy. The pop-up headlights are an aerodynamic abortion, too heavy, and ugly.

the rear window, with wing attached, weighs 52lbs per the bathroom-scale method...not the 80 or whatever the light-parts companies try to tell us.

It's not so much about aerodynamics, it's about styling. And it's not that I don't care about aero - I do, just not in the case of this thread.

Don't know what you're talking about regarding flip up headlights being ugly. They're cool!

The popup headlights are actually OK. The front of the car has a much higher air pressure than the rear, so air flows around them without (much?) separation. Its the rear of the car where airflow separation creates drag. Thats why the rear "spoiler" is raised up, to create enough drag, i.e. slow the airflow, so it stays attached coming down the rear hatch. It also extends as far back as was allowed (by whoever makes those decisions) to minimize vortices coming off the back of the car.

As for Ecomoder.com, its gone.

I messed around real quick with this photo thinking of a merger between the 928 lines and Caymen lines. I don't think it works well with the 944 rear but I suspect it'd work better with a 968 rear.
