Why not put some "holes" in the sides to make little windows in the big orange parts? To make it look like ... for lack of a better term... 928?

This is what I've always envisioned.
Forgive my terrible editing skills, and the fact that I stole cylcone!'s pic.
I don't have the skill or connections to get anything like this made so I was going to just start with blue tape on the glass hatch to simulate d-pillars.

this could be good if the rear hatch window was not intercepted in order to install the pillar. i think it would be really cool if the pillar tastefully sat under the window with supports, so that it would be easily visible under the glass! of course it needs to be designed in coordination with the existing 944 styling!
i'm thinking sort of like this, but adapted for the hatch (see how the glass is supported?):
