I think what people meant by "911 window" was the rear windshield, I call it the back glass. Since once the hatch is modified like that, it will need a flat rectangular (slightly trapezoidal) glass instead of the 944 one with the 2 bends in it. Personally I'd just use a sheet of lexan.
IMHO that last pic above looks like it will require some severe welding to work! Plus, it looks like a Corrado again

No plans myself to modify the rear quarter glass. Just replacement of the glass hatch. Will probably use a decent thickness of lexan, just cut in the shape of the 911 family rear glass. Thicker than what would be used in a track car, this will be my daily driver.

Hey don't get me wrong, I think the Corrado looks awesome! My brother has one and I think it's one of the coolest looking VWs.
The goal is to make the 944 look better without making it look like any other car, we still want it to look like a 944. I like this thread!

The thing about this car is it looks about as great as it ever will. Anything you could try to do in order to improve the looks really just looks out of place. The entire car would need to be redesigned in order for it to work. See picture above with entire body kit and Testarossa/512 moldings or whatever. The 928 is a different story, though... that hideous OB *** end could benefit from ANY type of modification.

I'm sorry but all those solutions look really ricey to me. No one over 22 wants anything that looks like it came from the Fast and the Furious.
Why not just take what is already a classic, iconic shape and just "clean" it up the way Foose and other resto rod builders do? Eliminate some of the trim, bumpers, wings, etc. and break it down to its' simple essence. That's how they take American classics like the Mustang and Camaro and make them look more clean/modern. I think it would work for the 944 and give a more mature, polished result.

I think the lesson is that more than the hatch needs to change. Give one of these to a hot rod fabricator who isn't afraid of using a sawzall and a TIG machine, there's more that could be done. The whole rear end really needs to be integrated with any hatch change.

ricey is a term that is miss used a lot...you can have a bodykit on a car and it look great..now an aluminum wing, terrible fitting bodykit, painting everything that is interior looks ricey it's not a professional looking upgrade that complements the characteristics of the car so its all in the matter of how it flows with the current lines of the car...
As we see with the hatch there isn't really anything that can be done without redoing most of the car, so it's best to leave it. Though these cars were made in the 80's they have style that surpasses the 90's.
I think what we've learned is, if you want it to look more modern then do simple changes and maybe even look at the 968 as an example since in reality that is the modern 944.
