Default Fuel Pump Size Varies with Replacement ?

I picked up a newer fuel pump off another members 951 to replace the failed one in my 85.1. I pulled my old one out tonight (Which I believe to be original unless it was replaced some time between 85 and 91), compared it to the new Bosch. The Bosch is slightly longer, maybe a little bigger in diameter. I don't think there will be any operational issues, just worried about fitment and maybe bumping the gas tank. Has anyone else ran into this?

they updated the pump for the late model cars. however the fuel pump was the same from nas and turbos and ive been using a late pump in my car for 3 years. that looks like on of the "generic equivalent" pumps

It has Bosch stamped on it and Made in Austria, might be an OEM version or something. Thanks for the piece of mind.

I recall reading on this forum, that the early 944 tanks were smaller than the 85.5 and later, so you might well find a fitment problem.

Early and late pump arrangements are totally different. The pumps are physically the same size, tho. What is the # on the new one?

My god, it never fails to amaze me how eaten up cars from OH and PA are from salt!

"Original" Pump Bosch "0 580 464 028" (014) 451 Made in Germany
New Pump Bosch "0 580 254 942" (506) 685-03 Made in Czech Rep.

Yeah I am just replacing that whole piece from pump to filter, This car was garaged for most its life, its the damn salt.

Thanks

From the Paragon site:

If your 924S,944,944T fuel pump is blue use 0.580.464.021
If your 924S,944,944T fuel pump is green, use 0.580.464.028

In my experience, early cars all used blue pumps, the green ones indicate a pump made for late models that apparently varied speed under some conditions. I believe you can use a green pump on an early, but using a blue pump on a late model may not work completely right (but it will fit). The Bosch pump I bought at NAPA for my 86 is 0.580.464.069, and it works perfectly.

Just went out to test fit it, No way it is going to fit, diameter is way to large, I would have to jam it in against the fuel tank and that would be if the mount was pushed all the way over on the rubber bushings holding it in place. I'm going to try and return it and get one, now just need to figure out which is the right one. Some people are saying the earlys take the blue and others the green. Well mines early and had a Green so Ill probabally just try that.

I found NAPA to be a good deal; they are local, so any problems are resolved in person with people who recognize me. Their price was competitive ($160). Warranty resolved locally too, if it happened.
