It's not only about if you can afford a professional paint job....it's also about if the price is justified.

When it comes time to paint my 944 I will probably do a cheapy job like this even though I could get a professional paint job. Why? It makes sense for my situation. This car is a $2,500 daily driven toy. I drive down gravel roads, salted roads, have people bumping their cars/shopping carts against me, etc. If I paid $5,000 I would cringe every time I heard a rock pop up and gouge my finish. With cheap paint I just shrug and keep going. Then I can use the money I saved on other things. This year its 2months straight exploring China and sitting on tropical beaches. Lounging with a daiquiri in hand or getting an ulcer over a messed up paint job? Easy choice for me.

As alxdgr8 said "No reason in spending money on a paint job that would cost more than the car in my eyes"

To those that have shared their pics, great job guys! It's amazing how nice you can make these cheap paint jobs look.

Would I be crucified for doing a very dark red paintjob, not even close to anything out of the factory?

Just checking

My 944 NA has gone through a number of paint jobs - The last one has been the most sucessfull.
July 2000 - Old faded earl schieb paint job.

October 2000 - Same faded paint, but with lost of wax & rubbing compound.

April 2002 - Ditched the earl shieb for rattle can red, plus decals - Cost was $25 without decals

This worked pretty good, but I needed some more white infront to make it standout. So September 2003 she looked like this.

By November 2005 the car was getting ratty looking.
so bad in fact I don't have any pictures from then. Plust a little body contact pushed me over the edge. Time to paint.

Here are a couple paint threads - I sanded for days, primed and painted 2-colors.

Which created this.

Now 3 years later it still looks good, I did have to redo the nose, but that is all.

Unless you have a low mile show car, spending $5000 on a paintjob isn't really what I'd call a smart way to blow money on a 20 year old daily driver.

While those other nay-sayers are cruising along these guys who put money into performance mods vs. expensive paint jobs will be lapping them.

I'd like to see more DIY paint pics!!!

I think it's a fantastic option for a race car, or when you're starting with a tired paint job. As much as I wish it were true, I don't think any 924/944s are going to be appreciating in value.

Mine has gone up about 10x in value since I dragged it home.

Default can the rustoleum paint be clearcoated?

Also, is there any reason it can't be waxed like a regular paintjob?

This is a great idea, just wondering if you can make it look even better with a little elbow grease.

nah its only cheap *** because youre in usa. here closer to germany things are a bit different. porsches are expensive and as one member here has in his signature; **** in **** out.

$50 paintjob is just the way of ****ting on a otherwise great car. now I think this kind of painting is perfect for track use, but for street car? come on. I wouldnt be driving car painted like that on the street if I got payed for it. not even with grocery bag on my head.

here in slovenia gipsys paint their cars nicer than that and with paint gun. and I am not joking. if $1000 (700€) is a lot of money for a paintjob, than maybe bycicle is a good alternative. (and it can be properly painted for $50)

sometimes it just pisses me off when I see somebody making **** of otherwise nice thing. porsches are one of the most expensive cars on the planet to maintain properly, so if one cant afford maintaining it, why is it good idea to make **** out of it? I think my former country made car exactly for this purpose and its name was yugo.

and there is a simple way of DIY painting the propper way, with paintgun and aircompressor.
