Default $50ish dollar paint job

I started with this Blue 88 944S

I really really liked the stock nautique blue color (driver's side) but for some reason 2 owners ago decided to start painting it and didn't finish (passenger side) and I got sick of the two tone.OK So I back in Nov I found a website called 50 dollar paint job and was really impressed.See it here When I got home for Thanksgiving break I started with a little test square on the sunroof and liked it enough to move to full sunroof. I only got 4 coats on before I had to leave to go back to school but planned on finishing the whole car over Christmas break. Over Christmas break I sanded the whole car, took off the bumpers and front air dam, taped the remaining rubber and went nuts. I spent ~$70 combined at Home Depot and Autozone for these materials:

I lost track of how many coats of paint it took but I am sure it was at least 8. Yellow is a weak color to cover dark blue.

Ah, I've been wondering how this would do on a 944.

You didn't take off the blue first?

Semi-final product

It took 20+ hours to do but when I took it out for the first time as I went to unlock the door a 12ish year old kid in a parking lot said "I thought your car was a Ferrari!". It was worth every minute.
Still to do:
Few more coats on front air dam
Touch up, run removal
carwash
Final 1500 grit wetsand
carwash
Buff/Polish.
Dance.

Nope, the factory paint is VERY thick and I didn't feel like sitting for hours with a RA Sander and buying 5 packs of replacement pads. Instead a spent many many hours painting the same thing over and over.

first few pictures of the hood being pained yellow was frightening. But it got better, and I'm amazed at the outcome!

I must say, good work and congrats!

Looks like you've lost the clear stone guards on the front fenders... you might want to replace those, or it will show pretty quickly.

I just painted right over them. We'll see how it looks after my 300 mile trip down to school.

This quote from the other thread summed up my thoughts when I saw the words $50, and a roller being used "When I told my best friend that I was using a roller instead of a spray gun, he looked at me like I had a d*ck on my forehead..." but I have to say I'm pretty amazed at the results you guys got!

I might have to try this myself. While it's no replacement for a professional job I won't cringe when I'm sliding down a dirt road sideways.

Thanks for trying such a unique approach and posting for the rest of us to see. Do you happen to have any closeups of the finish? It looks pretty smooth but I'm wondering if it has a slight orange peel texture up close.

Yea, I still have the dreaded orange peel, but all the pictures I try to take make it look either way worse or way better than in real life. I still have the 1500 grit sanding to do and am forecasting that it will take out the rest of the orange peel, and the buffing will make it shiny again.

That's awesome. Its great to tackle something like this - can't beat the satisfaction when you're done.

I've got a lot of sanding to do on mine (sprayed) too. Looks like you have a really good spot to start from on getting a flat paint job, but it looks great the way it is.
