Once you find out more details about what work it needs, I would move to the 928 forum for help.
If the paint and interior are good and it runs / moves under it's own power. I would do a compression and / or leak down test.

Only things that kept me from getting a 928 was the fact that I wanted a manual, and I wanted a sports car, not a posh 'sporty' touring car. I feel like I made the right choice the way gas is going now, since it would be my dd...
Either way both cars are great and have their pro's and con's, we're all narps here after all.

I was so close to buying a 928 instead of the 951 and in many ways, I wish I had. The 1992+ 928 GTS is my favorite Porsche of all time, with the 85.5+ 951 being a close second. I wanted a small, fun and somewhat fuel efficient vehicle and I thought the 951 would fit that bill, but so far, the fuel economy of mine has sucked.
Once I move and get settled in again, I'll be looking for a 928 garage mate for my 951.

It's one thing to buy a $4k 928 and end up with a decent car for a small investment. But I will never buy one for $15k even though that's what everyone says to do. In my mind it dosen't matter if you spend 44 or $15K they will still cost you money. Correct me if I'm wrong here?

I have a thread on the 928 forum. They have been very helpful although most tell me to stay away from cars like this one due to the cost of part's. But I like finding cars like these, you can usually do some work and have a car that I otherwise would never own.

If it runs (good) and passes a compression / leak down, I say why not? Even a $15,000 928 might still need a timing belt / water pump job and an intake refresh (what I'm sure this car needs).

Lets get back on topic. Will a 928 s4 that has been sitting for a year and needs some work be a nightmare?
Or is it possible that I will end up with a car that I like better than my 944 na ?
I can purchase the s4 for $4k so the price is good, but I know what your all going to say run run run!!!

Just like getting a 944 that has been sitting it could be nightmare or a deal. I will say that and 928 S4 at 4k is either a steal or real POS. Be very wary as a big POS 928 will be alot more expensive than a big POS 944 to make into a nice car.

It is quite likely that a 4k 928 is beat to hell. If so it comparable to a 1k 944 and well all know that those could be made to run, but parts value or possible track car is best way to go.
The 15k S4 will be alot nicer and like a 8-10k 951. The biggest issue with the 928 is that old beat ones will be alot more expenisve to restore since many used more expensive materials and parts. Plust production volume was much lower to fewer donor cars as well.
There is no "cheap" way into a 928 just like there is no "cheap way" in to a 944.

But to shop around until you get the response you want seems a bit... well... silly.
What posses you to think the the 944 crowd (no offense guys) are going to be more of an expert on 928s than the 928 guys?

If your budget is $4k~$5k and you want to spend it on a 928, then do it; but do it eyes wide open, knowing that you have been advised not to do it. $15k is a healthy budget to get a decent 928. You might be able to get one for a bit less, but you generally get what you pay for.
Good luck whatever your decision.
BTW, I hope you prove us wrong.

It has nothing to do with means and everything with what you want in a car.

Normally, I'd agree with you, but in this case, it sure sounds like it's a matter of means. They guy has a 944 budget but wants a 928. Pardon the analogy, but it's like converting a Fiero into an Enzo becasue you want an Enzo.
