bringing the shine to that paint shouldn't be too hard.

dash/pod cracked at all? regardless $4k for a 80k S4 is a good price. you could do a complete rebuild on that engine and assuming nothing is broken you'd only be in like $7000 for a really nice 928.

I thought it was a good buy myself but the poor running condition is my concern. I am sure it just needs some attention but you never know I guess it could be something major.

I hope it works out. See you over on the 928 board... of course, you could still ask your questions here, but you'd only get half an answer!

My advice is to dive in.

You are taking a gamble that you can get the car back on the road with minimal effort and investment. The "gamble" part is why you get the lower price.

If you can afford this gamble and you want a 928, now's the time.

If you can't afford this gamble (i.e. the possibility of needing to pour in another 100% of the cost or more to sort the car, plus the always lingering threat with any Porsche of an unexpected and significant repair bill for something unforseen), then walk away.

I don't believe the dash pod was cracked but there where some cracks on the dash itself. Not to bad though.

Who can tow it home for me?

A compression check wouldn't hurt anything. If you end up with broken rings / scored up block it's no longer a $4k car.

I agree. This will be my deciding factor.

on the topic of 928s I think they are so undervalued which is a good thing. The same year 911 often costs twice as much as a 928.

For 10 grand you can get a pretty nice 928S or even S4 and even considering the expensive maintenance that's a really good value for the performance you get.

Yeah, those round reflectors are really gross, and definitely spoil the look of the car. There's nothing like them here in Oz; the little rectangular units on the side of the car are indicators.

It always looks to me like someone in authority said: 'How can we discourage Americans from importing these cars? I know - we'll put bicycle reflectors on their sides. That'll do it. And just for good measure, we'll detune it as well..."
