Default Rear brakes dragging after disc/pad replacement...

Hey,

I just replaced the rotors and pads on the rear of my car and now they feel like they are dragging pretty bad...I don't know what the issue is. The inner pad on the drivers side was a b*tch to get in, but when it went in everything felt good...or so I thought. Any idea why they are sticking so bad? After about 5 mins of driving they were smoking a little.

Somethin about '88
somethin about '88.. ^yeah it was the year i was born, i can see how it can be a very special year . Too bad my first two cars were 89's. Sorry for the offtopic, I'm truley bored. My friend had this problem on his older jetta, late 80's style. But it was a beater car.. brakes were prolly origional, and very old. It started making a really loud screaching noise, horrible sound. I think his pad was completely worn off on the one wheel. And calipers were just stuck. So i'd say check the calipers, or brake lines.

Have they been bedded in yet? New rotors and pads can be very tight. I was always surprised how far the pistons have to be pushed in to install the inner pad. There really isn't too much that can go wrong so I would try the high-speed bedding in before assuming something is wrong. They will get very, very hot but just follow the instructions and don't park it until they have cooled down properly. I've always used this method:

That binding of the pads from the spring clips can cause them to drag because they can't retract.

Well I pulled the new pads and put the old ones back in. The old ones had 50+% left so I'm not worried. It seems that the spring clips are bent on both the inside pads so its causing the pads to bind and not retract on one half. Do they sell just the springs anywhere or is this a "replace the caliper" type of situation?

It's actually corrosion behind the spring plates, unbolt them clear the corrosion and the issue should go away. The allen head screws holding in those plates are evil...they are locktited and must be heated prior to taking them out.

You could send them out to be rebuilt to a place like goldlinebrakes.com

When putting the calipers back on, you need to remember to put the spacer washers back. If you don't, the pads will drag on your rotors because the calipers will be in the wrong location. About 3 millimeters of difference IIRC

Thanks, the spacers were put back where they should. The issue was with the retaining springs.
