Question Belt covers - delete or not?

Going to be doing my belts/rollers this weekend, I LOVED on aribop's car the lack of belt covers. I know this has been beat to death, but I have to ask.

If I delete them, I will delete front and back - I have an intact belly pan FWIW.

On which car, NA or turbo? I run my covers deleted on my late NA which sees mostly track use and I love it. Keeps maintenance simple. On that car the rear cover came off over the crank pulley. I do run belly pans all the time to give a little protection from debris.

On my turbo I am currently debating the same issue. Whoever decided you should have to pull the crank pulley to remove belt covers for a water pump job was a moron. That is a huge guiding factor on the turbo. But even with belly pans and due to the extra heat present in the engine bay for constant street use I may reinstall the covers on the turbo.

So what would be advantageous about deleting them anyway?

The waterpump cannot be removed without the belt cover there, it makes belt and water pump replacement more time consuming. In my opinion, it's nice to be able to visually check belts and seals everytime you open the hood. it's less bolts to take off.. and less annoyances.

You can see everything, makes diagnosing fluid leaks MUCH easier - and there are many fasteners that are suddenly accessable.

well if there off you will need some other insurence . like seal up th bottom of your engine bay for pebbles and have valve reliefs in the pistons so you can loose a belt at no cost.
it is realy the back cover that is the trouble maybe some little mounts to hold the front cover without the back one .
i saw i nice cabon fibre replace ment cover the other day i think it was far more basic .

I leave the top portion of the cover off. Little chance of anything getting kicked up with the lower cover plus the splash tray. But still plenty of visual access to see whats going on.

A lot of people just deleted the front covers and left the rear ones, which could cause problems.

With the covers (front and rear) on, as well as both plugs, i still get sand and dust on the rollers/gears.

Yes, maintenance and inspection would be a breeze.........they are there for a reason, but too much exposure for a street car is a good point, a track car would be alright......

Just my opion here, but to me its kinda like covering "other" things. Most likely nothing serious will happen, but there is one thing that could be fatal.

and not one "NO BELT COVERS BIATCH!" yet. Pathetic!

Why not get all new hardware (or make them yourself) and use anti-seize? It's an alternative to sans covers, and you still get the added protection of them, with ease of removal.

If not that, my vote is for sans covers.
