CATIA is used a lot in the automotive industry as well. Dan P, we have a sweet GOM scanner but I'm not allowed to use it, or our "3D printer" for that matter.

Put me down for a copy of the SW file when you have it ready. I can web-host for others to download from if you'd like.

Here's an updated link to the model:

This will let you flip it around in 3d. Have fun!

Cool... If I had a Pro-Engineer model I could CNC up one of these bad boys. I've been thinking of rendering one myself but my modeling skills still need to be improved.

Firefox users: you have to open that link in IE and install a solidworks Active-X control. Not a big deal, but linky no worky in Firefox.

Nice work man!

I spent way too much time this weekend trying to build a 3d model of my car. After about 20 hours there's still a long way to go. The back is very basic so far, the hood has no detail, the roof isnt mapped. There's issues with the glass too.

hey mike

nice job. just add motion blur!

really makes me appreciate the design on these cars and how the 944 improved on the '24

i would have spent 40 hours just modeling a bumper that would have looked pants compared to that.

i would just say the black on the sides of the fun continue up a little further up the window and maybe some fresnel in the diffusion channel on the paint. mat. could look cool.

those wheels must have been a little tricky

can you spit out an .obj? maybe i should find time this spring for trying to model my 924s

I just bought a FARO laser scan arm (portable cmm with laser scanner on it), and Geomagic software at work (about $130k package). It would be perfect for this. I might be able to get away with using a 944 as a training example here. Where can I get a hold of a scale model to scan?

There are several 1/24th scale 944 models you could use, would that size be about right? If you need one as a loaner, let me know. I suppose assembled would be your preference, right?

This arm can measure anything up to about 8 ft. in size, so 1/24th scale is fine. I could actually scan my whole car if I "leap frog" the arm around the car to join all the scans into one coordinate system. I don't think my company would go for that, though. I don't have a scale model, so if you can send me an assembled model temporarily that would be great. I'll pm you my mailing address. We're just getting ramped up with using the arm, so if you can send the model soon, that would be helpful for training.

We've been trying for years to get one of these bought at my workplace. Absolutely the most awseome thing EVER for reverse-engineering (except tiny details). Every time we demo one or I get to see one in action at a local shop, I go back to my suddenly-obsolete single-point CMM and cry.

FYI, get the biggest model car you can. These systems (both the laser and the surfacing software) work better with bigger objects. I've seen tiny details get wiped out by the surfacing software.

The best would be scanning a full-size car - but aside from the obvious "Umm.. sure it's work-related, boss..." problem there's the very real technical challenge of needing a Cray supercomputer to handle the staggering volume of raw point cloud data you would generate.

I have no idea how you did this, but it's awesome! Did you use Alias? Maybe there's a way to take the laser scanned model that I'm planning to make, and wrap your rendering around it so the result is to-scale? I can output an STL (polygonal mesh), cross-sectional splines, or point cloud (xyz) from Geomagic easily. Turning the scan into true CAD geometry will be a LOT more work.

I can take in any of those formats and convert to a solid. As posted above, small details may get whacked, but they can easily be modeled back in.

Thanks,

right now its a mish mash of vertices and textures that are stretched in all the wrong ways. there's a couple of lights that are casting shadows on the ground but not affecting the model, all the shading is in the texture, which is a major cheat. I didnt use any bump maps yet so that'll add a lot of definition.

You're right that the correct way to do it would be to build each panel and put it together like a kit. It wouldnt be too difficult just time consuming, really really time consuming.
