The NY Times isn't exactly known for setting any standards in automotive journalism, and I see they're living up to their past work...

RUST IN PEACE
WHAT WAS IT? The Porsche 924 was a 2+2 sport coupe sold in the United States in 1977-82.
AND THE POINT WAS? Porsche has periodically felt the need to offer more affordable models. These budget-minded Porsches often missed the mark, and the 924 was perhaps the worst of them.
AN ACCIDENTAL PORSCHE Part of the 924’s deficiencies as a Porsche may stem from the fact that it wasn’t supposed to be a Porsche. Porsche designed the car in the early 1970s for Volkswagen-Audi. But VW decided to drop the project, so Porsche cannily bought back the rights for less than it had charged for the design work.
BIT PARTS Audi assembled the 924 under contract, but in contrast to another, earlier VW-Porsche collaboration (the Porsche 914), nothing except the seats looked familiar to Porschephiles. The switches, door handles and instruments all came from VW or Audi parts bins. Worst of all, the water-cooled engine was up front — a cardinal sin in the view of purists.
THE ADS SAID: “The best part of the 924 can be summed up in two words. It’s here.”
THE CRITICS SAID: Jim Schrager, a collector and expert in South Bend, Ind., called the 924 “one of Porsche’s darkest moments.
WHAT’S IT WORTH? In March, a clean 924 driven only 25,000 miles sold for $2,500 on eBay Motors. Ratty cars often don’t top $1,000. ROB SASS

Seems needlessly negative, and irrelevant... there are hardly any 924's on the road these days. The ones I see are always 87-88 924S'es, which are really just narrow 944's. I'd be much more interested in an article that informs people about forgotten or under-rated older cars that they may not have known much about.
