If you consider that the 924 was the most economical Porsche of the era (the 911 and 928 were much more expensive), then Porsche is still plying the same marketing tactics (Boxster => Cayman => 911).
It's not the resources that you have, it's what you do with them that counts. IMHO. By that measure, the 924 / 944 / 968 geneology is a success.

You also fail to mention many several innovations that the 924 introduce to Porsche, such as Water Cooling. Which the 928 line went on to use. Keeping in mind, that the 928 nearly pushed the 911 out of the entire Porsche line.... The 944 and 968 also went on to use the water cooled front engined design, and those are very long-lasting cars. Because of the 924's innovations, the 944 came into existence, and became the fastest selling Porsche model untill the Boxster was intoduced.
Without a 924, there never would have been a 944.
Guess what also uses water cooling now? Right. The 911. And the 924 pioneered the way to that. And without the water cooling of the 911, Porsche would not be able to meet emissions standards.
So you can thank the 924 once again.
The 924 also had a perfect front to rear weight ration, and resulted in one of the best handling Porsche ever. As reported in Excellence magazine, J. Pasha described the 924 as "the best handling Porsche in stock form".
There were a total of 121,289 924's (non Turbo) made between 1976 and 1985 worldwide, with 36,902 coming into the USA over a ten year period. These number were enough to save Porsche from financial disaster.
Yes, a 924 was my first Porsche. Yes, it had a few problems, but they were easy and cheap to fix, and the car was easy to keep on the road. I now own a 911 and the later 924S. But, I wish I had that old 924 in my stable again.
