My 924S Adventure (Bought 924S and drove from Denver to Chicago)
Home sweet home.
Let me start off by saying a HUGE THANK YOU to Geoff (Porschephile 924), Hank, and Sean (sp?).
The story starts when Geoff checked out the car and gave me the thumbs up. I booked a flight to Denver. I flew out of Midway airport at 7:00 AM (CST). Arrived in Denver 2.5 hours later where Geoff picked me up from the airport and we drove to meet the seller and pick up the car.
Fortunately, we picked up the car right next to an Advance Auto Parts. After patching up a tiny fuel leak, we hit the road to Geoff's house for a little preventive maintenance. We were joined by two of Geoff's friends, Hank and Sean.
After some lunch, we got crackin on the work. We changed the timing belt, balance belt, and rollers. We had a rebuilt waterpump ready to go in, but Geoff checked the pump and there was absolutely NO play in the pulley, the pump rolled smooth, and felt great. We decided not to change the pump since it was in such good shape. Then we buttoned everything back up.
The PO put a cone filter and magnecor spark plug wires, but you could hear the wires arcing, so we put the stock ones back on that came with the car and that went away. Then we put the stock airbox back on and it was time for some SeaFoam action! (Pics below).
I'm pretty sure I am the 3rd owner of this car. The PO bought it in Sept 06. Before that it sat for two years. We used the SeaFoam to clean out the engine a little. Then we poured BG 44K into the fuel tank. The engine runs great, but starting it is a topic for another thread
After dinner we changed the fuel filter since the one in the car was the original one. That was the end of the PM we did to prepare for my drive home the next day.
The next morning at 7:30 AM, I packed up and left for home.
Below is a Map of my journey and the stops I made along the way.
Start: Denver, CO - 7:30 AM - Full Tank
Stop #1: Julesburg, CO - 11:00 AM - Filled 8.3 Gallons
Stop #2: Kearney, NE - 2:30 PM - Filled 6.98 Gallons - Ate lunch
Stop #3: York, NE - 3:30 PM - Bought snickers & drink.
Stop #4: Earlham, IO - 6:45 PM - Filled 10.0 Gallons
Stop #5: DeKalb, IL - 11:15 PM - Filled 11.8 Gallons
End: Chicago, IL - 12:30 PM - Filled 2.3 Gallons
Distance traveled: 1032 miles
Fuel used: 39.4 Gallons
Average fuel economy: 26.3 MPG
Total travel time: 17 hours
Net driving time: 15 hours
Average Speed: 68 mph
And now the pics. This was my first roadtrip and I didn't take that many pics. I wish I would have taken more.
First two are of the gate at Midway Airport where I was waiting.
Next I was trying to take a picture of the Rockies from my window on the plane. The view coming into Denver was beautiful.
Here is Geoff and his 924S arriving to pick me up! Sweet ride!
Next is the starbucks where we waited for my car to arrive
The car finally arrived. Immediately we started looking it over. Geoff couldn't resist the urge to check out the engine bay.
My view of the engine bay. Ugly cone filter.
Another pic. As you can tell, the Denver sun was VERY bright. Geoff's car is patiently waiting in the background.
A side view. The cosmetics are pretty rough, but she runs like A DREAM!
The engine work in progress. The engine bay is actually pretty clean.
Hank after picking up his MINI S. What a kick-*** ride.
Sean supervises the SeaFoam action.
Leaving Denver in the morning. My crappy picture does not do the view any justice. Simply breathtaking.
Crossing into Nebraska
Stopping for lunch in Kearney, Nebraska
This giant Lord Of The Rings looking thing in Nebraska
The rest area in York, Nebraska. I bought a snickers from the vending machines that were outside the rest area. The snickers was frozen. There was only one thing I could do.
Melt it with my heater
Crossing into Iowa
After that I either forgot to take a pic, or it was too dark. But, the last two are memorable for me. Finally arrived home!
The best part of it all was the car was an absolute steal at $1500. The engine, brakes, tranny are in great shape. The engine runs very smooth and does not stumble, miss or hesitate at all. It pulls smooth all the way through RPM range and makes good power. I am absolutely stoked! The only mechanical problem is the car has a hard start, but that is the subject of my next thread.
GREAT SUCCESS!!

Well, the 928 is much more smooth at higher speeds and pulls much harder, but the 924S feels more nimble & quick around town.

Too wierd. I sold a white 924s to a guy in Denver in August, but looking at the pics I'm pretty sure it isn't the same car. Tell me the last 3 digits of the VIN aren't 725.

But yeah, great find Borys! I didn't ask how much you paid until you bought it for a reason... there's a good chance it'd be 924S #2 for me... Great find, and I'm excited to see the finished product!

thanks Geoff. I don't think I could have gotten better help if I paid for it. And oh yeah, I'll let you know if I do have limited slip once I get the car's *** in the air and spin the wheels.
I don't think I could have been any happier with the purchase. Now we just gotta make sure we both make it to fest next year....it'll be my first!
