I honestly don't get that many stupid comments. I do get quite a few compliments thou, driving through town kids will say "nice car!" but thats all.
Rock, I avoid the guys at auto-zone like the plauge as well. Once I called to see if I could get intake manifold gaskets, I spent a half hour trying to convice the guy that the 944 turbo ones are the same as the 944 n/a ones. With no luck I hung up on him in frustration. Ended up ordering them from paragon overnight. (Thats why I always order from paragon or Zims)
I've heard this one too, then again my boss is the one that introduced me to my 951. Its more of a joke than anything else.

I arrived at Ft Monroe in April of 2005. In May '05 I bought my 944S. So at that time I had an '05 Ford Explorer Sport Trac, '01 Mustang GT conv (wife's car), and then the 944S. Later in '05 (september to be exact), I bought my 944 Turbo.
I got put under investigation by my chain of command because I am an E4 in the army, and I have 4 vehicles. But, not only that, 2 of them are Porsche. They just couldn't GET IT that they could actually afford one.

Well I know I am going to get bashed for this one.
But the 914 as was the 924/944 series cars were manufactured by VW. In europe the 914 and 924 was sold as a VW-Porsche at VW dealerships. VW also ran a series of races using these cars solely. Although designed by Porsche you can see where VW had it's manufacturing influances on these cars. The 924 engine was actually an Audi derivitive. For all the 928 haters the 944 engine is esentially half a 928 engine especially the S & S2 variants. It wasn't until the 968 that the cars were built solely by Porsche.
I loved my 914 2.0L although essentially it was a VW and the 944 is a blast to drive, almost like a 914 with more power. It seems that no matter what Porsche I have owned or driven people always try to sound smart around you and talk out their a$$ in an attempt to impress you with their knowledge. I just smile and take it as a compliment.

I usually get the, "wow, what's it like to drive a Porsche?", thing.
Although one time I got the, "that isn't a real Porsche", comment. I just replied back - "maybe so, but it's still better than the piece of **** you're driving" (a Saturn).

All Toyota RWD have rear CVs other than their trucks. I say thats a few million cars so unless the CV shop guy is REALLY stupid, I find it hard to believe anyone working there more than a week will say he has never seen a rear CV before. As for poor man's porsche, I have heard it used on the 924/944 but originated with the 914s. There is no doubt that the 944 series is the introductory model, which would be considered the "poor man's porsche" even though that poor man back in the 80s pay as much for their car as a new corvette. I figure the corvette being one of the most expensive American car back then, anyone driving an American car back then would be worthlessly broke compared to the poor man.

So far, everyone has asked me if there's a V8 under the hood.

I've been impressed how few car snobs there are here in Detroit... probably because most are more car-savvy than the rest of the country...
As for those who aren't even driving a P-car... "Wow. You're the first Porsche snob I've met who doesn't even own a Porsche!" Usually when I point out how cheap I bought mine, and consequently the fact that I have a stable of them, more than I know what to do with, and enough to trip over...

I have to disagree with Mr. Cobalt, not bashing just disagreeing. The 924 and early 944s (before 85.5) were in fact Audi (Audi is owned by VW) drive trains. From 85.5 on 944s were all Porsche. And yes the late model (85.5 and later) 2.5 liter engine is essentially half a 928 5 liter. The 928 was built as a Porsche from the ground up. Excellence has a great two part series on the 928.

I had a guy who drove an auto IS300 tell me my car was weak when I told him my 944 has 165 hp. Of course, I said "Yeah, only real men drive manual". No offense to those 944 owners driving auto.
It doesn't matter what BS anyone says. Anything heavier than a Miata or a motorcycle or less powerful than an M3 or Integra Type R can not hang with a 944 anyways. I love watching wannabe racer tailgaters lose control because they try to maintain my 80mph in a 30mph turn.

At my very first DE event with the 944S2, my work assignment was a flagging station at the Uphill at Lime Rock. I was teamed with a 964 owner. For a full half day I got the "944's aren't real Porsches. Your 16-valve motor is very fragile and prone to break. Better not drive it too hard."
Towards the end of our work assignment, I found out that he broke his beloved 964 that weekend. Again. After a complete engine tear down and re-build.
He spent that afternoon figuring out how to get his undriveable 911 back home (to NJ), while I was zipping along on the track having a blast. <-- Priceless.
