I had that happen to me at a gas station. Some guy came over and was asking me about it. Of coarse he had had one once, but his was a mid nineties model and had a V8. Not like my silly little Turbo 4-cylinder.

I always get the "man, you must be rich" comments too. I just have to roll my eyes and go "umm....yes?". I don't think there's another car out there for under $10,000 that will impress so many people as a 944.

LOL!!! when I worked at the cigar shop, there was this one kid who came in to buy a Ford zippo... got talkin cars, and he asked what I drove... I'm like, "I drive a Porsche... I love it. it's not too fast, but damn will it handle well." he says, "Well, yeah, Porsche's first engine that's not been a 4-cylinder was the V8 in the Carrera GT" I'm like, "Um... lets see... the 911, the 914-6, Cayenne, the 928?" so he says, "Yep. all Inline 4 bangers..." I sent him on his merry way and laughed my *** off at how he argued something so insane.

Well, as for CVs, ALL BMWs I have seen of any year has rear CVs. All Mercedes of all years have rear CVs. All Nissan 300zx, 200sx, 240sx, 280zx have rear CVs. All Toyota RWD have rear CVs other than their trucks. I say thats a few million cars so unless the CV shop guy is REALLY stupid, I find it hard to believe anyone working there more than a week will say he has never seen a rear CV before. As for poor man's porsche, I have heard it used on the 924/944 but originated with the 914s. There is no doubt that the 944 series is the introductory model, which would be considered the "poor man's porsche" even though that poor man back in the 80s pay as much for their car as a new corvette. I figure the corvette being one of the most expensive American car back then, anyone driving an American car back then would be worthlessly broke compared to the poor man.

I've noticed that recently at Advance (discount) Auto parts... -since the DAP/Advance buyout in fact.

So, neighbour... (I'm in Lake Mary) -I actually used to live about 2 miles away from the factory where they made the TR6. TR7 etc. -I'm not sure that the TR8 was made there, because by the time the TR8 came into being, Triumph had pissed off the British car-buying public so royally that they pretty much pretended that it didn't exist!

Don't think for a minute that American parts are all that's bad on a 1970's British car; oh no... you're not taking all the credit for that! -One word: "LUCAS". -The only way they could have achieved that kind of product reliability was to have all the parts assembled in the middle of a winter's night, at the bottom of a coal mine, during a power blackout, with no batteries!

Round here Boxters are ten-a-penny, and in suburban dormitory hell Cayennes seem to be the desireable objects du jour. My car doesn't turn any heads and the cops ignore it,. which suits me just fine. I routinely see speeding mid-30's blonde housewives driving cayennes, with cellphones clamped to their left ear obliviously being chased by highway patrol cars ablaze with flashing lights who see them as easy targets...

"Lady-driven" -HA!!! -My wife is indeed meticulous about car maintenance, and she NEVER lets her Volvo sustain any sort of problem: everything is fixed right away, and the car has 160,000 miles and the regular mechanic (for major work; -I handle routine oil changes and small maintenance, anything more complicated than a valve cover gasket replacement goes to a local Volveo specialist) begged her to sell it to him last week when it went in for a new crank seal.

Now, the fact that her car is immaculate has NOTHING to do with her being a lady: it's got EVERYTHING to do with the fact that she's an engineer! She has an engineering Bachelors from Georgia Tech, and a Masters from Duke and NOTHING gets neglected.

Most 'ladies' are less than fascinated by engineering or cars in general, and that's why cars are sometimes low-mileage, and MIGHT be worth a sniff: but the high-mileage ones where the 'lady' wasn't mechanically fascinated... RUN AWAY!!! -The same goes for mechanically disinclined men of course; the gender reference is irrelevant.

The one thing I detest is comments like:

"Ahhh...-I thought when you said you had a Porsche that it was something FAST, like a 911..."

I don't care though... I love that I have a couple of German cars, and I LOVE forced induction!

Well, my 914 is always called a MG or a VW. When I was little my Dad had a 944 and my other friends Dad had a new '88 911 and he used to tease me calling my Dad's 944 a Saab. That used to burn me up!!!!!!!!

By far the stupidest thing people say about the 944 is that is is blasphemy to put a pos american motor in one.

Actually it's a Porsche thing . Every VW Beetle (pre-98) had them under the rear seat.
