Unhappy My car is gone forever (PICTURES on page 3)

Well, Dont really know how to say this but my 944 turbo is gone. I went to my friends house today and parked the car at the top of his driveway, and walked down to help him wash his car. He noticed smoke coming from the top of the driveway, we ran up and saw that the front of my car was on fire. We ran down grabbed fire exstinguishers and ran back up, but couldnt put it out. I called 911 and 4 fire trucks showed up, they ended up having to spray the whole car for about 20 minutes. By the time they got there the whole car was just charred. I took some pictures and plan on posting them up once i feel a little better. Its hard to believe how fast you can lose your pride and joy.

If anyone has any tips on how to deal with the insurance company and how to get what the car was actually worth please let me know asap.

-Jeff

Very sorry to hear that Jeff. Was there any indication at what started the fire?

HOLY CRAP.

wtf happened?!?!

that car was pretty nice, dammit! omfg. that is total bull****.

advice- find other cars in similar condition to yours in your area with good prices, and show that to your insurance. they wanted to give me 1k for my 944 when it got crashed into, and i did that, and they ended up giving me ~3500.

that sucks, dude. that sucks SO bad.

wait until winter to buy another one, when the market is slow, and you can get the right one for the right price.

edit- i hope to GOD you have receipts for the electronics in that car (audio). if not, find them *NOW*

Sorry to hear that.

I don't have comprehensive on my car, which sounds scary now. I was thinking about getting new gas lines, but this seals the deal.

There is a factory Department of Transportation mandatory recall on all 85.5+ 944 /951 with the rubber fuel line from the damper to rail. They leak and there is no way to inspect it unless you take it out and flex it at the bend to see the cracks. The fuel leaks right down to the wires so if you have the car running and you have an arc from an old plug wire, poof the car burns. Its rare to see a car sit and start on fire though its possible for the fuel lines above the headers to leak down and once fuel hits that hot header, well you know what happens. If the fire started in the interior, electrical short from aftermarket unfused power wire is most likely the cause. As for the leaky rubber hose at the damper, Porsche will replace the part free of charge if your car has not been fixed. I have bought and taken apart more than 10 944/951 burns and personally seen a heavily modded 951 start on fire and burn to the ground while I was driving around more than 15 years ago. Sorry to hear what happened .

start the process with your insurance company. say as little as possible. i made the mistake of telling them all about the good stuff at the start. then when they lowballed me i had to work my way up.

tell them what happened and wait. when they come to you with a number i will work with you to get more.

in the meantime make a list of things on your car (other than stereo crap) that makes your car special/better/worth more. we will then figure out what you can get on the open market with the $ they offer you and work your way up from there.

Of course i said we, but if you want to do it alone i will not be insulted. And for the record any help i give you will be to help you get a value for your car. I will not offer any legal advice or give you legal strategies, for that you will need a lawyer licensed in your state.

good luck.
