Hey, another thought to consider:
Although you will pull the engine sans head, it would be better to put the cylinder head on before installing the re-built engine, as it will be easier to not get any dirt etc. in the motor doing everything on the stand. If you do this, then putting the engine back in from the top will be more difficult...
It really depends on how you want to go. I would definitely prefer closing the engine before the install.

yeah and andy.. how are you going to lift the engine with out the head on? you can go around an engine mount or something but is not as controllable as the engine hook at the back of the engine, which is attached to the cam tower..

very bad news update.. 
Estimate from the machine shop here: $900 work. And to top that off they prefer to assemble it because the block will need oversized rings because cylinders 1 and 3 look sloppy. In order to build a more solid motor where the rings will seat properly, oversized rings are probably going to have to be used....
Grand Total......$1,300.
I'm doomed...I don't have that kinda money

Andy, AFAIK, there should be no difference in building with oversized rings... if I'm wrong, someone please correct me. don't wanna give bad advice...
give the 900 to the machine shop for the work, save $400 and put it together yourself.

i haven't followed your thread closely, but here's my suggestion:
1. take out a personal loan for a couple thousand dollars to rebuild the engine. after all, nobody said it would be cheap. $2100 is not that bad if you do the basic upper and lower gasket kits yourself. add another $1200 or so for those
2. buy another engine to install. 86 na must be plentiful and cheap
3. or, simply sell the car and take a loss. don't you have a 928 to drive also?

Ok guys, this is a good update. My father spoke with the guy at the shop, who apologized for the misinformation. Apparently they had just received another '86 block that was driven while OVERHEATED
This is my work order:

Clean Pistons $44
Hone & Lap Alusil Bores $184
Inspect Crankshaft $32
Polish and Machine Crank $32
Recondition Big Rod Ends $92
Resurface block/ Cyl. $76
Resurface Flywheel $58
Remove broken bolt $45 (broken water jacket bolt)
Drill Crankshaft $150
R&R Head Studs $80
Replace Wrist Pin Bushings $61 (includes overbore wristpins and install)
Grand Total: $894
This doesn't include short block assembly. I will be doing this myself and purchasing my bearings and piston rings from a local source that will challenge Pelican.
