Wow, sharp eye. Hmm...wonder what it would look like to put these lights into a solid nose panel:

Dang Matt, I don't need em right now. Maybe once I get everything fitted and some test shots of light. I'm kinda weary on putting them in there, but Dan says we can fix the wiring.

Let me know, they are in the box he sent them in. I will certainly want to go that way with mine. Dan, if you are listening, I will need the wiring to do so as well.

To be honest with you, I'm not sure. I'm not very knowledgeable about them, but my partner's brother is. I believe he was talking about lights from a Lexus, but don't hold me to that.

Matt, let's see what Wes works up and how many people are going to buy. I pretty much know the lengths required but I'll have to get the plugs and have everyone decide if they want a full new harness or just an adapter pigtail and run off the stock harness.

There are other issues as well. What lenses did I have drop shiped to you, the DOT or E-Code, that Wes is now using? People have to decide if they want DOT or E-Code. (E-Code are twice as expensive as the DOT, BTW.) The DOT lenses use a 65 watt H9 bulb. The E-Code use an H7 bulb. And the E-Code lenses are a little deeper in dimensions. . I believe the mounting frame is the same on E-Code v. DOT but I would have to check and make sure.

In any event those use two totally different bulbs so we would have different sockets.

Since this is going to be a 4 light system with probably 260+ watts when on main/high beam you are going to fry the stock headlight switch without a new harness and relays like the one for my headlight kit. Probably the ground wire in the stock harness, too.

So, I guess we need to make some decisions once Wes gets his prototype done. If we go E-Code I'm going to need some lead time to get those out of Europe. They are gray market in the US and it is tough to find anyone under the retail level to buy them from.

Dan,
I'm pretty sure I have the DOT lenses. H9 bulbs and they say DOT on the side.

I'll have more info tonight.

Wes, if they say DOT and are H9 bulbs then they are the DOT lenses. Matt wanted those in a hurry so I got them from Hella USA - I'm now sure that is what they are.

They were DOT because at the time there was nothing else available. It took Dan a minor miracle and my checkbook a hell of a shipping total just to get that set (which is why they are insured for so much).

It is likely that I will not be using 4 lights. I would prefer to just use two with a dual filament bulb (if one exists) or just go without brights.

Matt, I already looked into the dual filament idea for another Rennlister who is mulling this project over. They are not made in the Halogen flavor. You can get them in the Bi-Xenon which is an HID arc lamp that achieves the high and low beam with a little servo motor that moves a shield back and forth around the bulb. The Bi-Xenon have larger dimensions than the halogen but should fit, depending on how far back Wes sets the lamps. They have more depth for the servo and such but should fit easy width and height wise.

The only problem with this Bi-Xenon solution is it is very expensive. For reference, low retail in the States is around $1100 for a pair. I'd have to do some work with sourcing out of Europe to knock that price down but whatever the outcome of that, they would still be quite expensive.

No worries, no inspection in Illinois so either no high beams or I will just have you grab me another set of lenses. Not afraid of the Xenon price, more the wiring and fitment.

Default My solution

Well, First time trying to post a pic so bear with me. I did the conversion about 1 1/2 years ago primarily to save about 20 lbs on the front end. It's a track car so it's not super refined, but the light output is about 200% better. Hella 90mm lights fully DOT legal. If it doesn't work, try http://www.geocities.com/dymant212/944.html

Here are Toms pics. If this works, these are going to look fantastic! He tells me there is no need for the bubble.
