Aaron what about that loud pop. Under that scenario it would have to be a back fire, right?

I got mine for 265. Not bragging

Expect to pay 700 for a decent engine.

IMO, sounds like a piston rod break. But I doubt you would have made it home. Oh oh oh!! Guess what. I ran my old engine with a broken rod and no oil. It took a lot of carb fluid down the intake. It didn't sound very good.

Good luck with the diagnosis.

700? ****, i you guys are lucky. our cores cost 1500 and a running engine will cost 3000. im planing at least 5000 for my engine rebuild. well then again it will be closer to 8500 when its done with the extra stuff (5000 was the quote for a stock rebuild). i have to add 700 total for shipping (350 each way), 900 for remanufactured solex carburetors, 500 for used heads (mine are shot), 350 for a full flow oil filter, 500 for an aluminum oil cooler, 200 for a new lightened crank pulley, add a little for the hotter cam, unshrounding the intkake on the head a bit...

it should have some nice get up and go though (much more compared to stock).. and it will be very reliable too.

tehehehehehehehehehe... im all aflutter.. i ship it out this week, and will have it back in may.

A 912 followed me through the U past this old car show this afternoon. He ended up following me for awhile. We went driving for a good half hour before we stopped. Nice guy. Well restored, it was green. Very nice. They say that Gainesville used to be the porsche place, not anymore :-O. Guess the U types like to stick to hondas :-(.

Im not really sure what the loud pop would be in my scenario... maybe a back fire, or maybe the gasket was under a TON of pressure when it "popped"... huh, im tired...

thats cool! i wonder if its anyone who posts on 912bbs.org or belongs to the 912 registry..

i have a honda.. well acura. but its a beater. quite relliable through out the years. its starting to get alot of problems though. im gonna try to get a lease on a used A4 or a used jetta this fall.

work just announced that my dept at work is getting laid off unfortunitly, but a rennlister who does IT for the same place and is in the know because he has to do everything to the systems gave me a heads up a few mos ago before my supervisors even knew. because of that i was able to get another job lined up in the nick of time. so what would have been a really ****ty time has actually worked in my favor. i hope they have a good severence pkg like they did last time. 6 weeks pay isnt a bad thing to have when you have a new job ready to go

Years ago. Too may years ago, 1977 to be exact, we were visiting my wife's brother in Gainesville and discovered evidence of your observations. Come to think of it that was three wives ago, also...but on with quick story.

Gainesville at the time WAS full of older air cooled Porsches. Was not unusual to see 911S and RS and 356 Speedsters around town. About two blocks from my then-brother-in-law's house, there are a shop in a little industrial shell building park called Type 356. The building had two claims to fame...neat bathtub Porsche restorations and the Urban Legend that it was one of local rock star Tom Petty's first rehearsal halls

Dude.

That did not sound or look good (like you needed me to tell you that). When the car made that bang, did lurch/shudder? Or did it just BANG? If that is the case, it was likely a backfire caused by some other form of mechanical cataclysm...

It is kinda weird that you were able to drive it home. I would think a severe mechanical problem could seize the engine or atleast really F*** things up. What are all the possible causes of a backfire (assuming thats what it was), timing off, eh, or what unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust system, eh, what else is there? Neither of those sound right unless his Tbelt slipped... but that doesnt cause lots and lots of smoke.

Rock - have you been out to check it out today? Is the engine leaking anything? Is it starting up? If so, how does it run? Im very interested...

There is nothing wrong with that car. Added backpressure from cat blew a gasket or a rusted pipe - sucked smoke from the heater.
I run my stock block at 30 psi and 500 HP - if you had oil in it and drove home, it is fine. 944 na engines laugh at the small amount of air they have to deal with.

If you change the rods and pistons on that thing, you have a turbo block that can make BIG power - that's it, they are the same.

Maybe the oil filter gasket blew, spraying oil on the exhaust in combination with something else?
