Default 77 924 Restart after many years...

I have a chance to get a 77 924 with only about 30K miles for cheap ($500 OBO) from a guy that posted on this board: https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/170064-77-924-fs-just-has-to-go.html

Of course it does not run right now as it has been sitting in storage for the past 10 or so years.

My primary concern was that the gas has turned to a delightful varnish over that period of time. Seller says that they have flushed the gas tank, but have gone no further. My concern would be fuel injection issues...

I'm not sure if anyone has any experience with trying to start one after so long, but any advice would be helpful.

BTW, it would be a car for my young daughter to drive, and for me to have fun with autocrossing. Currently, I run my 74 Pontiac Trans Am project that I finished building a 455 for, i.e. I have some mechanical experience.

Any help/input would be appreciated.

Rule of thumb: Nothing is more expensive than a cheap Porsche.
But, if you do decide to get it, flush gas, new plugs/oil/filters/battery. Run some fuel injector cleaner on the first start attempt.
The oldest thing that I have started is a car sitting for 8 years.

Current owner has flushed the fuel tank, but has not hooked it back up yet. My concern then would be forward of the gas tank, i.e. fuel pump, filter, injectors. I would definatly replace the fuel filter right away!

Trumpeter,

Do you own the 455SD T/A that autocrosses with the CSCC at Scarlett Oaks?

No I have, a regular 455 that I overbored and zero decked for compression, 6X heads, and a repro Pontiac 744 cam with a bit more lift. Currently I am running about 13.6's according to my G-tech. This winter I will be installing solid bodymounts, and redoing the rear leafs, (the front is currently rebuilt with all poly).

I currently just run with the local SCCA Chapter (CENDIV in Illinios). There is a guy on the Trans Am boards that runs in Ohio with a Black 77 4 speed 400 TA. We where going to meet up this summer for a pro-solo event but I had a last minute Symphony gig pop up.

FWIW, for autocross, I change to an old set of Z28 rims and run Hoosier Autocrosser tires. Sadly, I am not very competitive in ESP. While it is a BLAST to drive, I want something a bit more autocross oriented. While the Porsche will be driven by my daughter primarly, the understand is that since I turn the wrenches, I get to turn the wheels on the weekends.

A regular Pontiac 455 cubic inch motor as opposed to the Super Duty 455 motor, (which had special, crank, rods, heads, etc.).

Zero-decking an engine is a process where you mill the block so that the pistons rise to the very top of the bore - even with the head mounting surface, (normally there is a small space left as a safety margin) to raise compression.

6X is just the head designation/casting number. My Pontiac 455 had 7K3 heads on it from a 400. Great motor.

Trumpeter, I say go for it! 924's may not be the fastest thing around (90 hp IIRC) but they're great fun! and that statement "There's nothing more expensive than a cheap Porsche" doesn't really apply to the 924...you can buy your parts at a VW dealership, and get them for half the cost. Also, it's a non-interferance engine, so if the timing belt snaps, ya just have to toss a new one on. no bent valves or anything.

I say sounds like a helluva deal. People here on Rennlist aren't as knowledgeable on the 924 as the people at www.924board.org but both boards are great! (the reason I came to Rennlist from the 924board is because the 924board doesn't know as much about the 924S or the 944)

Happy driving and welcome to the board!
