Welcome Niche, and to the rest of you guys the engine got collected from Cork in Ireland where I live by a courier today to take it over to the Ninemeister for him to begin to strip it down. Hopefully it will be reunited with it's shell for the first time in a quarter of a century ( 1988-2013 ) soon. Current thoughts are leaning towards Sepia and Narrow !

The car was delivered day one to its first owner in Italy, does anyone know how I could find the original italian Registration Number and possibly track down the owner? I'd like him (her ?) to see the finished car and maybe even give them a spin in it. Say they were 45 in 1972, they'd be 86 this year. Hopefully they are still alive , well and interested in Porsche 911s. It would be great to do, would'nt it not !

Well done Ninemeister - this is top class work! Well done Colin for keeping this thread updated and interesting with great pics! I think it's 3 Oulton park RS day's ago (next week) since this car was dropped in Warrington by Barry after a very late night/early morning in Chester with me :-) so... that's two full Calendar years - interesting that after all the exotic and interesting Porsche metal you've had through your hands Dave, this is the first full "nut and bolt" ground up restoration, of a car you've owned a long time and have plenty of history with! I'm very excited and really delighted for you - a true Porsche man through & through....

How about this Whipps ? Slate Grey ( an early flat colour, not the modern metalic slate grey ). Photo does not do the colour justice. You are right, brown is NOT a sports car colour. Today I passed a 1970s Triumph Toledo in what almost looked like Sepia.

Endo , that s a lovely colour, what do you mean a variation of slate grey, have you a code or is it different , eg a non Porsche Slate Grey ?

It's a custom color I made for that car, but it just goes to show that a non-factory color can work very well on these cars.

Yes indeedy!!! I'd wholeheartedly support the use of an early flat grey colour ( Endo's is gorgeous! ) particularly matched with a dark red leather interior. Bryan Kane's interior from the sadly written off yellow longhood that crashed on last years Cannonball run would be perfect and may be available! You should call him!

It's true, the engine actually arrived!That said, neither me not MD are quite sure why the courrier had the engine in the back of his van for two weeks so suffice to say that there is relief all round when it showed up this week.

As arrived the RH cam cover and chain covers were loose, 4,5,6 intake rockers missing, RH cam tensioner and cam nut were also missing. Naturally it did not take long to have it on the engine stand ready for the strip down.

Roll forward a couple of days and this is what we uncovered:

Cam chain guide failure had apparently caused the damage to the houding pegs due to the timing chain running on the pegs:

RH cam has taken a bit of a pounding from one rocker, probably as result of oil starvation from a blocked oil spraybar (yet to be inspected).

The LH cam just has one worn lobe, you can feel the step in the profile easily with your finger nail.
