Oh great, now we're getting advice from a chef.

Just kidding, actually his points are quite well made.

But, the french-fry guy is going back to school in a week, so I think the big promotion is finally here!!!!!!

This discussion just cracks me up! Every time the mention of a chevy v8 comes around, everybody sucks in their gut, sticks their chest out and all start pissin' away.

Whatever. To each his own.

Well if you are looking for mileage from a B5.9 or ISB Cummins think again. You will get around 6mpg speaking from experience.
Of course you would have a Bosch P pump or a VP44 on the ISB.

As far as certifications go ASE has been pushing the industry for along time to get all the techs certified. Hell they even have certs for the parts folks. Or in my field school bus which is a offshoot of Heavy duty.

So in a sense we are no different than any other proffesion that requires a license, except mine is not state required yet but it is required by my employer.

I have almost thirty years of working on all things mechanical from aircraft automotive and heavy duty/school bus.

Now when somebody says a Porsche is some sort of engeneering marvel it is'nt. They do things well in some areas and poor in others.

The idea that everything from the US is a POS and everything from EU is perfect is crap. As I said in my first post everone makes crap some is just a little more friendly to work on.

I would just like to know who may have an idea how the automobile works versus smoke blowers.
Bad advise is worse than no advice.

Mr. Meat,
I don't know who the hell you think you are. This is a serious discussion forum for people who are serious about their cars. If you don't have anything intelligent to say, don't say anything at all.

I just met a guy last week at the local Body shop who was bragging how he has a Grand National V8 in a 944 (that he bought for $2,000) and gets something like 800hp. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Of course , he uses it for drag racing ... <img src="graemlins/icon501.gif" border="0" alt="[icon501]" />

Is this what Porsche stands for? It makes me wonder why these kinds of folk even bother getting the porsche body. Can't the Grand National frame take it??

He's lying! The 80's model Buick Grand National had a turbocharged V-6 one of the best engines to come out of Detroit ever IMHO, besides the Grand National frame can easily go into the 9's (with appropriate safety mods)

The French know how to make a good hatchback - I had a 106 (its about Geo Metro sized) with a 110hp 1.3 litre 8 valve engine which revved to 7500+ (I never did hit the limiter). It felt like rear wheel drive.

Renault make a 170hp hatch (the Clio) which could even scare a few Porsches...

Of course, build quality and reliability is not too flash (well, it wasn't in my Peugeot).

I had a LeCar once, real P.O.S., but very comfortable. If you talk Renault R5 Turbo, or Alpine, then I might take one. I have worked on enough of them to want to totally stay away from them.

Another example of the "superior engineering" you guys seem so enamored with in this quote from Anir on the 993tt board discussing the engine failure of his new M3 at 8000 miles

Thanks for all the kind words. It's funny, but I'm really not that upset about it. Somehow, I never developed an emotional attachment to the m3, like I have with the 993TT. The M3 is a capable car, but a bit sterile and wooden in its interaction with the driver. Plus, I've always had a sneaking suspicion that there might be an quality control issue. If you remember, they delayed the introduction of the first cars due to some sort of problem with achieving the necessary production line tolerances. Then, there were the cars breaking down at the track. Warped rotors, blown engines, ...
In the past three years, I've experienced quality issues with both a 2000 Mercedes S500 and now the M3. Leaves a bit of a black mark on that concept of traditional bulletproof German engineering. With the M3, I understand that the engine was pushed to the absolute limit of its original design, but the Mercedes issue was entirely with the choice of interior trim materials.

I used to like the new M3, but now I see it as the ultimate "Image" performance car. I'd take an S Audi car and do some mods and leave the M3 in the wake. Heck, I can build the 20V 5 cyliner to reliably make 350 HP. Let's not even begin to mention performance in the wet. There have been a lot of issues with the new M3 engines, some even letting go with just a few 1000 on the clock. Funny, you don't hear of this widespread problem with Porsche... Too bad their M3 was banned from racing....they technically stretched the rules on what was defined as a production car. We have yet to see a production ready M3 with a V8.

I just get tired about reading and hearing how "great" the new line of Bimmer cars are. Let's face it, for a whole lot less money you can buy a very nice VW (Jetta, Golf or Passat) that has the solid German Engineering and performs as well. BMW drivers have always claimed their cars were better or performed better than a Porsche. The worst are the three series drivers. These were the guys who back in the mid 80s called the 944 the "cheap" Porsche and claimed about how great the 318 and 325e were. The 944 could still tear both of them a new one.

I was never a real big Bimmer fan. For me the VW and Audi cars perform just as well and don't carry the "status" badge on the hood. Plus, I don't talk on the cell phone while I am driving. These days it seems to be a requirement for owning a BMW.

Some Bimmers I do like:
2002
3.0 Bavaria and Coupe

MBs I like:
230 ragtop, mid 60s
Gullwing

HI John:

I am a Beemer 3-series owner, I do use my cell phone while in it (not often), I do love it, it has been very reliable (245,000 miles and counting), I have owned an Audi (fairly reliable-electrical gremlins ruined the experience) and finally.... One of my co-workers says I'm crazy spending all that money on my German cars, why not get a Neon and mod it like him (for much less money).

I own the Beemer because it has been reliable, has classic good looks and is fun to drive. I could care less that it's a BMW rather than a Audi or VW.....

I have given this thread much thought (too much time on my hands???) and you know, it really is up to the user/buyer... Isn't it? The kid who works with me loves his Neon, garbage-can exaust, high-flow intake and soon to be installed turbo. He could be spending his money on something worse, like drugs, etc. Same with the guys who want to put a Chevy motor into a 911. More power to them. It's their money and who knows, their interest in cars may stimulate other youngsters to take up the hobby rather than other less desireable things. My love of cars has a daughter in a nice little Honda Prelude (totally stock ) and a son who has owned an old deisel Merc and a great little VW Scirocco.

Whew! Thats it. <img src="graemlins/soapbox.gif" border="0" alt="[soapbox]" /> <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

Have a good day.

Want independent verification of George's car?!?!?!?!

Mardi Gras PCA puts on events nearby at NO Problem Raceway. George bring it out to the next event and I'll make sure that I come to see how fast this car is. I've seen your car on Airline and I know it's pretty fast. Maybe, we can post some times for Pcars and times for your car for comparison.

I don't know George, and am not coming on here to race him or anyone else. I'm from a nearby city and am willing to post what I see.

George or Carlos reply to this thread please so that we can make arrangements.

Again, I'm not in your camp or against you, I'm just trying to allow you an independent Rennlister to see how fast your car is.

Geaux Tigers!
