Nice butt weld! Look up hammer welding. Be sure you get good heat penetration, and manage the puddle.
Curious, which mig welder did you get? My mig died a few weeks ago when I was welding a trailer hitch back together.

Hobart Handler 140. I need to practise on the welding, I seem to be burning through if I try to get a puddle going so its a pretty quick bead when run it. I do have to note that my beads look ok when I'm working 1/4" this 18-16 gauge is like welding toilet paper. I need to fiddle with the voltage. More reason to make those rose trellises my wife wants.

You might try a thinner wire. Your operator's manual may describe which wire to use with sheetmetal. If not, then there are books such as Welder's Handbook. I think you need to turn down the heat setting, which is why I suggest thinner wire. And a spot weld tip.

I'm picking up some ppg primer today to cover the areas I ground off. Most likely will not get to do anything until Sunday. Kids game start at 9am and go till 12, then THREE birthday parties to deal with after!

Just head on down to your local welding shop, and talk to the guys there. Get some advice, and maybe pick up a mini spool, the kind that is about 4" diameter to try out.

The real race in LB is tomorrow at 4:15pm....ALMS.
I popped up to watch qualifying this afternoon. Watching the Indy cars is enough to put you to sleep. On the other hand, Porsches, Ferraris, BMWs, Corvettes, Jags, etc are great to watch. Should be an interesting race.

I'm staying home tomorrow afternoon to watch it on espn3.com. I'm helping with a 993 motor install tomorrow morning. LB will be a zoo this weekend-it was packed today.

Ok so today was limited on the project, however I did get a big chunk of rust gone and learned a little more about the welder. I tried to drop the voltage on the welds but just didn't get the penetration on the metal. I'll go with Rusnak's suggestion regarding 0.6mm wire... I also played with the hammer and dollie kit I got. Really made shape a heck of a lot easier than before. I do have to note the third to last photo look like dung but that was before the hammer and dollie. I'm really happy with the results on the bumper. Honestly it's pretty satisfying to do this kind of work..... From rust to metal in 3 or so hours. Woot! Oh and I also cut out the fog light metal too...

Two more bits of rust on the bumper and it's done and ready to spray next week!

well done. There is no magic in this kind of work(or any kind for that matter), but the obstacle is to just get started. Keep it going...just think, the work you've already done is worth thousands in the end-result.
