Default Targa project.... WARNING NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART.

So after a VERY long day driving from Temecula to Van Nuys and then back again I have it in my garage. I want to tell you, I drive quite a bit all over So Cal and it's a little unnerving to drive with a trailer that also has an additional 18 inches of width. Evertime I'd see that "Shoulder closed" sign I'd get all sweaty, add that half the people think they are supposed to drive on the center lines not between them.
Before heading home I stopped at AAA to get the title transfered and after some back and forth I was able to ge the title in my name, and the car registered as non-op. Since the car is off the records in CA I do not have to pay sales tax on the car! Also, Non-op was a whooping $18. So out the door the car is legit and in my name for a "no so bad" $36.

After getting it home I poked around a bit (and will post further details of the true condition of the car). I would like you all to know that since owning it the value has increased 5 centimes..... Pulling out the rear remainig bits of carpet a small French coin popped out, from 1974! I guess this is really a euro model!

First photo is from the pick up point and the rest are at the house. Looks a little different than the 996!

Are you going to keep the "school bus" yellow? I would. I love that color.

You're gonna need more tools than those hanging on the wall!

Fun project with the kid... Enjoy.

Damn, you stole my line. LOL Let's see if your son's smile is that big two years from now, and the car isn't in paint, yet.

Looks like fun. Get crackin'.

Have fun and make sure to post pictures of the journey here. I can't wait until my kids are old enough to help on a project like this.

Many years from now, Ed's kid will be saying this (hopefully without the cinder block customization)

I like the hammer. "If your only tool is a hammer, all your problems start looking like nails"

It's up on jacks and the tear out is in progress. (For all you, "what's left to tear out?" guys... Suck it!)

Yesterday we couldn't get the tank out and I thought there might have been some sort of attachment fron underneath. Finally today I was able to get under the car and see that there is nothing there, so with a littel prying, the tank unattached itself from the sealer/glue/whatever. Worked a little on the vent ducts and unclipping some of the wiring.

The front suspension pan is in need of replacement... I knew that and confirmed it today. The front clip might/might not..... I need to see what else needs some grinding. A small portion of the Targa bar needs cutting, a couple spots in the interior pan.

I did go out and buy a Kobalt 30 gallon compressor. Pretty nice, reasonably quiet and does a good job with using a 1/4 angle grinder. With the grinder I (Clayton too) was also able to dabble in removing primer and corrosion. If anyone has any words of wisdom on corrosion repairs I'd appreciate it. There's a lot of cleaning to do.... I need to find different grinding bits to get into the corners and edges. I'll be heading over to Home Depot tomorrow for tool reloading. Oh and regarding the wall tools, they are the quick grab tools The other side of the garage is the tool box etc....

And for the pictures....

Just seeing this....been in "dog world" the last day. Glad to see it is home. I'm bummed I probably won't be able to see it tomorrow. We'll see how getting the young one home from the hospital goes.

Be careful about too much bare metal being exposed for too long. Once you've assessed a given area, and it's good, it may be worth shooting at least some spray primer on to keep the metal protected. Porsche did nothing as far as corrosion protection in those days.
