Post WRX's are fast [my 3.2 82 911 vs 2002 WRX]

I finally got my 911 out to play for the summer. My roomate has been dying to prove that his car [2002 WRX] is faster.

His car has been significantly modified -
No cats
Upgraded Intercooler
Stand alone engine managment
huge exhaust
boost controller
underdrive pulley
He thinks hes putting about 220hp to the wheels [~320 crank]

My car has had a fair amount of modification as well -
3.2 liter from an '86
ported and polished head
turbo evo cams
fuel chip

my Advantages
his car is AWD which robs a significant amount of power
his car weighs 3200 lbs [mine should weigh around 2400 i think]
I've got 1.2 liters on him

my disadvantages
slow shifting the 915
my 911 / 915 driving skills are weak
his car redlines at ~7000 rpm
his turbo
his car is 20 years newer than mine, lol

anyway, i was thinking it would be a fairly good match. i was pretty wrong.
I knew i could never take him off the line. Mostly because I can make a pot of coffee in the amount of time it takes me to shift from 1st -> 2nd in my car.
On the highway at about 65mph we lined up. I was in 4th gear and he says he was in 4th gear. We both punched it. He blew by me and I couldn't have caught him if life depended on it [i had a half a car length at first, but i think it was his reaction time].

hmm.. his mods would probably put him at the 250HP mark at the crank, not much more, but the cars are surprisingly quick.. im surprised you lost by as much as you did though, thought you would have fared better.. but at the end of the day, its still a subaru.. and you still have germany's finest

His car has a lot of mods and is likely making a LOT more power than your car. Weight matters less at high speeds it's more power and drag (aero and mechanical friction). Also, what have you done to get your car's weight down to 2400? An SC weighs 2756, according to Porsche, if I remember correctly. Your jump on him was probably due to his turbo lag -- once he had boost he was gone.

Why were you not in 3rd gear?

well, i thought the number was 2500... and my car is missing the following:

All A/C & Heat components
The unnecessary interior pieces [rear seats, rear deck, side pads, center console, etc] and has been replace with RS carpet. I figured all this stuff should add up to about 100 lbs.

hi there...this is mike the WRX owner. A wrx is 227hp at the crank stock...with a chip alone its 265hp. Anyways...I made a mistake on hp when i told paul its actually:
Max Wheel HP: 242.5 hp @ 5785 rpm
Max Wheel TQ: 225.4 ft/ibs @ 5339 rpm
That's not my car but its one with the same parts just minus the underdrive pulley and with a different muffler.

Anyways...I just wanted to see how I would do against a 2wd car with similar whp from a roll. Its hard to compare my wheel and crank hp numbers to other cars because of the massive driveline losses.

wow, i underestimated how much HP a chip can add.. that still puts your HP at about 270ish, and i still would have guessed the 911 would have done better.. but maybe a 3rd gear race might be in order =)

oh geeze...my car is not 2wd. 242 at the wheels is 326 at the crank on my car.

and i don't have turbo lag on the highway...the stock pea shooter of a turbo spools immediately. paul took off and i followed.

i wasnt aware going to 4wd makes that much of a difference in calculation, but i guess it would since it has to turn all four, huh

242 RWP for the WRX vs maybe 200 RWP for the 911 (= 240 x 0.85)? Perhaps the 911 is also geared higher and might make most of its HP at higher revs. Seems like no contest. These are 20 year old cars, fellas. Cars have gotten much faster in two decades, not to mention that the WRX is a pocket rocket. Maybe an eighties 930 against the WRX would be a closer match?

It's a Subaru! At the end of the day, which car would you rather be driving? Granted, I am fully aware that a WRX, Evolution, Mustang, etc will take my 993 C4S in a drag every time, I own my 993 because it is the complete car I have always wanted.

not dawgin on your roomies car at all.. subys are cool, infact they kick *** on wrc. but this is one thing i always take into effect; how many old subys do you see. not many. why? they dont last. a porsche is quality built and will last you a long time.

At 326 hp at the crank, that WRX is developing around 100 hp more than the '86 3.2, which is 200 stock (US), if memory serves. That's a huge difference -- of course the modded WRX is faster. According to the old road tests, a stock 19 year-old 911 Carrera 3.2 should be at least as quick as a stock WRX.

adscab,
Your C4S will beat a stock WRX -- mods throw everything off. You could modify your car too ...

the household also has a stock WRX and its amazing how much slower it is than Mike's car. I honestly have no idea how much power my 3.2 is putting out.... it's had a lot of work done to it and its A LOT faster than my 79 with a 3.0 [180hp stock].

i wonder how much boost my 3.2 could handle without causing damage...hmmmm..........
