As for feedback, it is no comparison with older 911s, my Carrera feels like a go kart while the WRX was isolated and uncommunicative in comparison.

I would be interested to see which car is quicker on a track when driven by respective experts.

Lastly, while a 996 is EASIER to drive at the limit, I would take a LIGHTER 911 with an equal Power to weight ratio any day.

Maybe all this discussion is why I am supercharging my Carrera. Now I have handling and the hp to back it up! I will say it even if others won't, its hurts to be beat by an econobox, even a $30k econobox.

Roamer, good point on the solidity of the WRX, I would agree that it doesn't feel "quite right" at the limit, though the friends car I drove was severely modified. Also true that the 911 will always be more communicative...it always tells you what it wants to do next (and in the 993 is far more progressive in letting out). Having said that, the Porsche still isn't perfect...and that is why I ended up enhancing the entire suspension.

I think my argument was probably pushing the pros of the WRX just a bit too high...but I am really sick of people bitching about a car that they have never driven, and being blinded by the Porsche monniker slapped on the front of their car. I feel that people in "econoboxes" have a right to claim they drive an extremely fast and capable car just as much as someone with a nice Porsche emblem on their car.

Grandma's car just spanks my SC 0-60 and on wet roads. Quality isn't the best, but for the money the over-all package of the WRX is impressive. Even Wayne Dempsey has stated recently that he is selling his SC because it is "underpowered", and rfng has called the SC "anemic". Instead of crying, I'm lightening and strengthening my SC. Enjoy your car as well, SleeperWRX!

Come on let's face it the WRX is faster on the sprint then many porsches. The best way to get revanche is race them to a round about when they are at your tail and be surprised how much distance you can make on a small 3/4 circle.

Then let them pass and give them a gentlemen wave and make the score 1 to 1. Each have their fun and lets appreciate that they are also fast car lovers.

You guys are all competing with eachother like testosterone filled monkeys. Your comparing a car that was the perfection of the early 80's to something that's pretty damn good for 2003. I've driven all these cars and own an 83 911sc. You don't buy a 911 for the $ to performance ratio (although not bad considering you can get a good example of my car for 15k). You buy it because the car's got an endless amount of potential. If one day you loose your sanity and decide to endlessly modify a street 911, you can do whatever you want n/a or force induced. Sh*t you can probably drive around with a 935 and it's just a change in body and motor. The wrx is a very quick car. I will say this though, i've never taken apart a wrx, but i believe someone mentioned the 3rd gen rx-7. This car has awesome handling and power, but i've talked to guys who specialize in this car that say it's practically glued together, unlike the older uglier rx-7's. This makes me question a lot of the new jap cars cause even though they are pretty, i keep thinking of the rx-7. He also told me that it's not worth buying one after 100k miles because after that the chassis will flex to sh*t on the track. Again, this wasn't me, just what a mech that works on rotaries told me.

Sleeper - have you ever driven any Porsche? I would bet that 10 minutes even in a 69' 912 would have a for sale sign on the Subaru.
And Legacy?? You can actually hear the windows bounce back and forth in those pieces of crap when you close the door - I wouldn't take any throw away Subaru above 80 mph - but that's just me.
By the way, Prodrive strips those chassis down to the bone and reinforces the hell out of them, among 100's of other modifications because they agree with me - and there is no way in hell that your stock chassis is not bent to some degree by those jumps in your pics - put it on a jig and see.

I remember when I was a younger man that all the "car guys" used to gush about how great the Buick Grand-National was, how great the Mustang GT was, the supercharged Trans-Am, etc etc etc These same arguments used to go on between these guys and Porsche Owners back then (for gods sake the Porsche only had little 3.2 engines back then with only a measly 210 hp). And you know what, I would guess that the same argument will exist fifteen years from now when the next "badest car for the money" has 450 hp and all the toys. But the funny thing is they will be arguing about this with the same people (Porsche owners) and those Porsche's will still be on the road. Would any "car guy" today in their right mind drive a '88 Buick (are they even on the road still) over my '88 Cab, not likely. Point being, I think the young man has an excellent Subaru, which sounds like its ***** to the wall fast and cheap too but like the Porsche owners of past explained to those Mustang guys and those Buick guys, I believe in 15 years I'll take my slow, old, outdated, puttering around town, grocery getter Porsche over a [fill in the blank here][SubaruWRX] but that's just my opinion.

Hey guys,
I think sleeper has been quite courteous and respectfull in his disscusions. He is not just trolling around like I see on alot of the import forums. Anyways I have a 84 930 and an 03 wrx. The wrx is a fabulous little car no doubt. It can be pushed to the limits easily and safely. It does understeer quite a bit but can be coxed into huge smile inducing 4 wheel drift. I have no doubt that it will last 150K + miles. In that distance any newer porsche would have depreciated by at least the cost of the wrx. You guys might be a little older than me, but to my generation the looks of the wrx are "hip". Anyways I dont think the suby is that much slower than my 930 in a straght line. I could make huge power with it for the cost of a 930 exaust. Hell I think you can by an entir engine for 3k. I had to have a top end rebuit on the 930 which cost me 8G!!! There are similarities between the cars: turbo boxer motors, quirky styling and interiors and racing heritage (albiet alot more prodigious for the 930/911). all in all I have about as much fun driving the wrx as I do the 930. Dont get me wrong I am a porsche purist and nothing turns my crank quite like the silouette of the 911 or the wide *** of an early turbo.

It is more a number of the Porsche owners here who have been shown to be close minded. I wonder if some of these people have ever driven a WRX? I think not.

Though come to think of it, their response would probably go along the lines of "I wouldn't be caught dead in a WRX...hence I have never driven one...". Oh well, I give up....

They are both great cars. I used to own a stock 99 WRX and my current toy is a stock 76 Carerra 3. They are both a pain in slow city traffic and great fun on a bit of windy road.

The best feature of the WRX was the traction, that thing was idiot proof, particularly in the wet, you could throw it around corners at ridiculous speeds. A very safe car to drive quickly. The worst feature was turbo lag, below 4000 RPM it felt a bit gutless, but it you kept it in the happy zone the acceleration was very impressive.

The thing that amazes me about the Porsche is that on paper it is only a couple of tenths of a second slower to 60 mph than my old WRX and has a higher top speed… this is a 27 year old car!!! In normal driving conditions it actually feels quicker than the WRX. It is such a low, noisy, involving thing to drive and it seems to develop more power at low RPM. Worst feature would have to be the slow clunky gear shift, 1-2 takes forever and clashes if I rush it.

I like the look of both cars, the WRX was very macho while the Porsche has a very sexy shape (all those great curves). My wife hated the WRX but loves the Porsche (hasn’t driven either car).

I'm referring, of course, to a well-tuned Subaru.

Don't be too quick to put down those great little cars. I would expect this forum to be 911-centric, but the arrogance is disappointing, and the ignorance is laughable.

One of the club racers had his WRX at a DE last summer because his 911 was undergoing some repairs. He seemed to do OK in our run group. I did not stop to look at what he was using for tires. Maybe he will post here, but I have only seen him post on the Racing Board.
