Will ordering a dash with someone else’s VIN show up on their carfax? I wouldn’t want to have to explain a dash being ordered for my car…

No, but I’d be curious to know. I bet the cost is quite large for the parts and labour, and it is also a recipe for a rattles. Here’s a link to a 982 dash into a 981 - I would not do this to my new car but that’s just me!

I heard there is a special box on the form the dealer can check, Porsche then sends you a case of Porsche Kool-Aid to make the cost pain go away...

Why would you use guards red stitching on the dashboard trim package when all other stitching is carmine red as are the seat inserts? The seat belts and pulls are a different thing. Just asking to make you check your spec.

The VIN just allows the parts guy to determine what parts were used during the build of the car in question, he then should be able to order matching parts/correct parts.

When you select Guards Red Extended Deviated Stitching, there is no Carmine Red stitching anywhere any longer. (I imagine you knew this, but just saying.)

One reason for doing this is to have a brighter red and possibly to match the Guards Red Instrument Dials and/or Sport Chrono face.

Further, a reason for doing this for someone who chooses leather steering wheel and gear selector is to have those two items stitched in colored thread — because when you select the option for leather steering wheel and gear lever, the colored stitching standard on the car (in Carmine Red for example) goes away in those two locations. The only way to have a colored stitching on a leather steering wheel and gear lever is to select Extended Deviated Stitching, which makes all the stitching in the car one color. At that point, Carmine Red isn’t available; so it’s either Guards Red or Bordeaux for red.

My dealer caught this and corrected it when submitting the order. All the stick is the same color

Yes, of course. But in the build link provided the OP didn’t select the $3680 Extended Deviated Stitching…just an add on leather element in a different thread.

Yes I noticed he had a clash of Guards Red belts and loops with the Carmine Red stitching everywhere else.

I didn’t study the guy’s configuration, so I missed the Guards Red dash elements. I ended up simply responding to that person’s question in a vacuum and helping out the other person (who posted his first post) to learn about how the process works in case he didn’t know.

I understand that, just concerned about carfax and how it can pick up things inaccurately. “Just” is very definitive and I don’t trust what gets reported after seeing a lot of inaccuracies.

If you’ve looked at hundreds or thousands of CarFaxes you’ll never ever see parts ordered. You’ll see accident reports or shop maintenance.

Given there have been accidents reported that didn’t happen I don’t trust it.

You don’t have to give anyone your VIN, right? And nobody is pressing for it, right? So what do you mean you don’t trust it? Don’t trust what, and for what purpose?

Unfortunately you are publishing stuff that isn’t substantiated. When has an accident appeared on CarFax that didn’t happen? Sure, I take you at your word — but I don’t believe for one second that wasn’t an oddball, isolated case. I’ve been looking at multitudes of CarFaxes way too long.

Ever order a part for your car at the parts desk using your VIN? I can’t imagine you haven’t, but I know I and many others have on many occasions. Do you think the conspiring CarFax gods are triggered when a dashboard is ordered but not when a lesser part is ordered? I ordered a leather armrest for my SL63 last summer using my VIN to obtain the exact leather color etc. I just ran a CarFax in your honor, and there is no evidence of the order there. And if there were, I imagine I could scare someone away by telling the person I simply ordered a leather armrest because I didn’t like the one that was there.

You don’t have to trust it, and I respect your prerogative to have and maintain a conservative approach here — I’m not being wise. I have said what I said so others can review perspective from the other side.
