Default GT4 vs. C8 Z06

So for starters, I just got a 6MT Spyder allocation for delivery this summer and I'm stoked. I can't tell for sure, but I think I was pretty lucky to get it, having been into a Porsche dealer for the very first time.

I was just reading about the new Z06. 600+ HP, flat plane crank V8 with a 9krpm redline, and a dealer network that won't have me driving 3 hours to get an oil change seem appealing. The price is expected to be competitive with the GT4. I don't think I'm going to change my order though. I think the C8 is a little overdesigned (never liked the big hard lines of GM/Cadillac) and will be tired looking soon. That being said, would any of you get a new Z06 over a GT4 or a Spyder? Would you cross shop them? Why/why not?

Although the C8 Z06 is not out yet, I am cross shopping them.

There are some unknowns about the Z06 though still... How far is GM taking this generation of Z06 in terms of all out track car. If it is to the extreme of the ZL1 1LE, I would probably pass as the DSSV's are WAY too stiff for street use. Another unknown is QC, I have had 5 Z06's both C5 & C6, I can tell you not one of them was problem free and 1 went back via the lemon law.

Another issue is ADM, even if it came out in the next few months, I would go for the GT4 and then maybe consider upgrading (and it will be an upgrade in performance from the GT4) in a few years after the hype is gone and the ADM's are gone, AND when GM dealers start discounting them (they always do after a few years).

I sat in a 3LT at a local dealer a few weeks ago and I was very impressed with the interior, no plastic to be found anywhere. All surfaces was real leather, or carbon fiber, or aluminum. It did feel big though, both on the outside and inside. the real estate on the passenger dash area from the beginning of the dash to the end of the windshield is HUGE. The driver's area is nice though and is very fighter pilot like.

There is no doubt it is going to be killer from a performance standpoint, the question is the rest of it and the decisions that GM makes with it that we don't know yet.

Either way, I would say hold off at least for 2 - 3 years.

I wanted a lighter car and better build quality so I didn't want a C8 let alone a Z06. Came from a 2017 SS 1LE

You should go sit in a 3LT C8, it is NOTHING like the 1LE. Mine is the 2SS 1LE and even then, there is NO comparison. The C8 in top trim level is just as nice as the GT4 interior wise.

The light weight part, I completely agree. We will see how far they go with the Z06 in that area. If they go magnesium fixed roof, titanium exhaust and the full carbon package, it could be quite a bit lighter than the base C8. Will they go that far with it, I doubt it, but you never know.

I came from 17 years of Z06s. Last being a C7 Z06 w/Z07.

Few years back bought a 987.2 Spyder, drove the Vette less and less. Dumped the C7 last fall when my Spyder arrived.

C8 Z06 will put up spectacular numbers, but no one buys these magical 982 GT cars for the numbers.

Yeah, they are very different from each other and the performance of the Z06 will also be very different. However with the C8 being mid-engined now and pricing expectations to come in right around the GT4 range for the Z06, they will still be cross shopped quite often.

I was very impressed with the 3LT interior trim. There is no GMness in that cabin whatsoever. They nailed it. It was my first time seeing & sitting in one in person. The layout is subjective, but the materials and fit/finish is ON POINT!!

I sat in a C8 umpaloopaville and there was no comparison to my Camaro four footed snuphalopagos.

I wouldnt but an American made car after my GT4. With Porsche the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. With Chevy/GM/Ford/Dodge the parts are just that, parts. Truly apples and oranges.... One brutish, unsophisticated, low quality, for the masses due to the lower price point (or wealthy people who can have multiple cars and want a beater), kinda trashy like Victoria Secret/Fredricks of the car world... vs elegant, sophisticated, great quality, for select and discerning gentlepeople who have money, kinda sexy like the La Perla of the car world! Ok I got carried away... but you get the idea some may cross shop (in fact I did - for all of 5 seconds) but most have made up in their lizard brains who they are or want to be.

You still have your 987.2 spyder? I should never have sold mine. so bloody raw.
PDK? I'd like a PDK one this time round but manual would be nice as well

I find the interior layout of the C8 very aesthetically unpleasing despite top notch materials. It looks very piecemeal and not smoothly integrated. I also find the huge butt of the Corvette to be quite hideous. While the mid-engine configuration is obviously superior and gives the Vette an exotic car look, I still think overall the C7 silhouette was better.

My preference for Corvettes in terms of exterior appearance: C2, C3, C7, C1, C8, C6, C5, C4. Both the C2 and C3 are smaller overall and have a nicely tapered-in butt. IMO Corvette should have gone the way of the Mustang and Camaro when, a few years back, they went to a retro-modern design of the late 60's look. Corvette should have gone to a retro-modern C2 design.

Form follows function....
How many sets of golf clubs can you fit inside your GT4 or Spyder?

Wasn't really much of the quality honestly. The weight sapped all the fun out of it. I wanted a smaller, lighter car above all

Many current Porsche owners transitioned from the Corvette; most often that is a one way street. Rest of P car owners it’s not even a random thought.

Sure will non Porsche owners cross shop? Of course, but that’s only interesting for Porsche business development or marketing. Most will buy one, because it’s not much more difficult than getting a vending machine candy bar.

Since most of your posts include camaro or corvette dialog suspect you are a typical “cross shopper”.

For emphasis I’ll add SOME CAPS and !!!! Lolz...

I will give the C8 Z06 a very hard look. The Corvettes have gotten better with each generation in terms of being a complete competitor despite the lower price point. I don't expect a C8 Z06 will replace my Spyder, but I may add.

I have a C7 ZR1 MT that is a lot of fun. There is something missing compared to P car driving experience though. On the street it just doesn't feel as connected. On the track, once the tires have heat in them, it comes alive. The comp seats suck compared to porsche buckets in terms of support. A car of the ZR1's caliber deserves better. From what I've seen of the C8, they have some improved seat options. I expect the C8 Z06 will compete with the GT3 performance wise, and be the closest total package to the GT3/4 so far.

I have a gt3 touring. Was on a few lists for a Spyder. Never got called. Once details came out about z06, I got refunds for the Spyder deposits. Now have deposits for z06. Hopefully it’ll be available soon.

I realized the longer I waited for the Spyder allocation, the less excited I got about the car. Opposite of my experience waiting for the gt3. I’m excited for the z06 based on what I’ve read. For me, these toys are about emotional excitement. Spyder just didn’t quite “rev me up” I guess
