You guys make me want to find a manual 4.0 for a test drive.

I drove a manual S 2.5 and seemed "fine" but I don't remember being wowed. But it was a short test drive, but included local streets and highways. Hmmm.

Great gear box, I highly recommend tracking one down before your freeze. It probably is the same box as the 2.5, but when you've got that 4.0L hooked to it I bet it feels a bit different (I drove a 2.5 but I can't remember the specifics). The auto blip makes it even more fun...., please don't let this thread sway your decision. PDK is awesome, but don't get it because of a few gear grinds.

Anyone on the fence about getting the manual needs to drive one before opting for a PDK based on this thread.

Agreed. I personally only want a manual on all my toys, and on my daily drivers too, but that's getting harder to find. Dedicated race cars excluded.

As for shifters, it's fine, just never going to be as direct as something without cables. I might upgrade the shifter in the future, once I'm sure there are no issues with the tranny. But for now, it's fine.

Overall, I am loving it! I'm just about at 1k miles. Soon I'll change the oil and start to give it the beans!

I have just turned 1200 miles on my CGTS 4.0. Never a hint of a grind but I do not try to speed shift. I drove a 2.0 PDK Cayman as a loner for a couple of days and thought the gear box was impressive. Having said THAT if you are getting a 4.0 CGTS or BGTS this may be one of your last chances to own a manual tranny with a larger N/A engine in a Porsche. Just my opinion.

My car is at the dealer but always mention the grind to ensure PCNA knows about it. I have definitely had fewer of them but did have one a few weeks ago during a very leisure slow shift so thought I would mention it again when I dropped the car off. It seems like Porsche has finally published something on the subject… curious about people’s reaction:
In the event of a complaint, a balancing weight can be retroftted on the manual transmission.
Replacing the manual transmission will not correct the problem because this is not a manual transmission fault.
Please note that retrofitting the balancing weight changes the vehicle's shift feel. As a result, shifting can then be perceived as less sporty than before and is then comparable with the shift feel of the 718 Boxster/Cayman GTS 4.0 (982).
On the 718 Spyder/Cayman GT4 (982), the shift feel was deliberately adapted to a sportier setup than on the 718 Boxster/Cayman GTS 4.0 (982).Inform the customer about this before retrofitting the balancing weight. Also inform the customer that retrofitting the balancing weight cannot be invoiced under the new vehicle warranty or PAW (Porsche Approved Warranty) as this is not a fault.

WOW! Hold the phone! I'm interested in knowing more about this. I wouldn't think this has anything to do with synchro grind, but now I want to know if I can REMOVE the balancing weight on my CGTS 4.0 to make it feel "more sporty." I wonder what the difference is, exactly. Both in feel and function.

Does anyone have experience with both a GTS and a GT4/Spyder for comparison purposes?

And where exactly is this balancing weight located? Tranny? linkage?

Do you have a TSB number or something that you can share?

If someone decides to have this change made be sure and post your thoughts, as well as the cost, time to add it, etc.

Interesting development - you SOL for warranty claims. I wonder if the GT cars have more or less weight? I drove a GT4 but never really noticed the difference, other than the shift lever height.

They didn’t send me the TSB #, just the text I pasted above. It’s $750 to install. At least IMO, something still doesn’t feel correct.

So, there is a subtle difference in the mechanicals of the GT-4 box vis-a-vis the GTS 4.0?

Did you have the work done? If yes, can you describe what was done? It seems that they were going to install a weight, but to what part?

I did not have the work done. I don’t want to be the Guinea pig. When I pick up the car in a few days, I will try and get more info.

ok, that would be great. Maybe installation instructions too. Snap a photo of them if need be.

FIFY... My guess is that all of the MT's behind the 4.0l's in the 982 are mechanically the same.

The GT4/Spyder have what is essentially a Short Shift Kit installed (SSK). I did the same change to my 981 GTS and there is a definite difference in feel between the two shifters.

This balancing weight will be something else. Personally, I am fine the way my car shifts...
