Why Porsche? Why?

My 14 year old 987.1 Cayman S didn’t do this!
If my Cayenne ownership experience is anything;
Don't worry it will only take them like 7 years to admit there is a problem and you can get reimbursed at that point, lol

I would not change my decision to buy the MT in these cars based on this thread...

100%
If you’re a manual guy at heart, get it. I absolutely love this car with the 6MT.

I did the grind thing early and after 40 years of manuals I think it was my sloppy shift both times. Word to the wise if you like manuals work on your technique not your configuration!

Pushing 11,000mi in mine. This thread is overblown. Is it a bummer to slow the 1->2 shift by half a heartbeat ? Sure. Is it a deal breaker for an otherwise amazing MT ? Nope. Is the transmission as good as the gt3 ? Nope. Is it absolutely fantastic compared to most anything else on the market ? Yup. Is it slower than PDK ? Yup. So ?

Both transmissions are great. If your heart was set on manual, I wouldn't listen to some random online melodrama

I’ve occasionally had it happen but even still, the 6MT is the way to go.

I used to have a few now and then after I got the car but I am 2k miles now and they are rare now, and only if I release the clutch pedal too soon when it is put into 2nd. This never happened with the 7MT in my 2019 Targa GTS since I assume it had a little play in it. I would still order the manual again though since I feel it is still an outstanding setup!

Early clutch release has been the culprit on everyone of mine. I haven't had one for months - we just adapt. This box is pretty ruthless in terms of required sequence - no slop or tolerance like you say.

Well, I'm disappointed to say: Hello, I'm Adam, and my CGTS4.0 will grind the 1-2 shift if I'm shifting quickly.

First of all, I'm a very experienced manual driver. Let's get that out of the way.

I have 200 miles on the car. I have driven it 3 times so far before mother nature foiled my break-in plans. It's now in the garage while the snow melts. But the 1-2 grind happened to me first when I was driving normally, but quickly. I assumed I must have gotten off the clutch too soon. And since the car is so new, I'm taking it easy anyway. Next time it happened I wanted to see if it was me. I'm able to repeat the grind, despite making absolutely sure the clutch is properly disengaged when I make the 1-2 shift. The revs need to be in the 4k range and I'm shifting quickly - not drag racing, but certainly not pausing during the shift.

I'm very eager to hear any feedback others get from their dealers. I'll bring mine in as soon as I can just to document it. I will take it easy on the shifting for the first 1k miles and likely go into the dealer and demand a fluid change.

BTW, shifting slower is not a solution. I can drive a manual entirely without the clutch once rolling and my passengers would hardly notice it. Those shifts would be timed such that the gears are aligned/synchronized when I shift. But one should be able to use the clutch and syncro's to not have to shift perfectly, bur rather be able to shift smoothly and grind free even if the RPMs are not matched when you go into the next gear. There IS an issue here. Hopefully, it goes away when broken in, but that's not a comforting solution.

Cable slack? I would think clutch cable slack yes, shifter cable slack? not so much.

As I said, not happy to join a 56 page thread!
...Makes me wonder how the car magazines do their acceleration runs without grinding the gears. I haven't seen any publication write about it.
I had that very thought myself. If this many people are experiencing it here, and not while trying to time our 0-60 runs or anything, how the heck has this not happened during car magazine testing? Maybe they shift so hard all the time that they anticipate a certain amount of grind! lol
