Gear 1-2 grind
#181
bk_911 makes a very good point. I posted my details previously on this problem. To summarize, this problem has been reported on 981 GT4s, and non-GT4 982. I have a 2018 base Cayman and had the transmission replaced under warranty. The first time I took the car in the the tech couldn't replicate the problem and they gave me a hard time about documenting it in the service report, but I insisted. As the grinding increased in frequency I made another appointment and requested a drive with the technician. During the second visit the tech managed to replicate the issue. I actually scoped out the roads around the dealership to find an area where we could do 0-35 mph runs in a safe setting and insisted on a early appointment when roads were relatively quiet. Take your car to a Porsche service center and get it documented in a service report. It may take several visits to replicate the issue. Reporting the problem in this forum is important but we will not fix this issue. Porsche will not fix the issue until they get enough reported problems and it starts setting off alarms. For +$100K car we should not be having this problem on one of the most important assemblies on the vehicle.

I have a 2020 GT4, build date 05/20. I've got about 350 miles on the car now, but during the first 200, there were occasional grinding sounds going into 2nd, either up from 1st or down from 3rd. I haven't had that happen for a few days now (knock on wood it's gone). However, today, the shift lever popped out of reverse and into neutral as I let the clutch out to back out of a parking space. I was on a slight incline, so perhaps this is related to the hill hold? Either way I'm letting my SA know.

Meh, I might mention it at the next service, but I'm going to put a lot of miles on my car before it goes out of warranty, so if this issue ever becomes a real problem, it'll get dealt with under warranty. I don't see the need to rush to the dealer for something that may turn out to be a non-issue over time.

No chief, the gear grinds around 5000-6500 rpm range. What I am trying to describe is "half throttle, rev meter read 5500 rpm, I shift, *kshh" grinds"

This gear grind fiasco is putting my 987.1 Boxster S back into play against gts 4.0 or Spyder. Its gears never grind, nor anything else goes wrong for that matter — now approaching 40k miles. Come on Porsche, you’ve been making manual transmissions for how many decades now? Don’t drop the ball on the basics.

They refer to it as "PDK" and it will be available very soon...

I am beyond 3000km now, I can feel the resistance going into second, the faster I pull the shifter back the worse it is, so I consciously slow that transition to avoid the grind...

Curious, it grinds with engine above 5500rpm no matter how slow the shift? What about below that, can you still feel resistance?

Not for me. Gets boring after 10mins of driving. When I drive a manual I feel as if I'm wired into the car through my limbs. With PDK I feel as if I'm riding detached from and on top of the car.

A friend of mine who is new to the P-car world with a 718 GT4 has made comment about the clutch really needing to be fully fully depressed in the car. He has come from multiple BMW manual gearboxes, and this was his biggest impression of the shifting differences (Aside the precision of the porsche gates). I'm wondering if that's an exacerbating factor here, but I don't have one yet to make my own judgement call.
