Potential 911 Sport Classic Prototype Spotted

By -

Is Porsche’s 911 lineup about to get even hotter? Mysterious new variant spotted on Nurburgring without much camouflage.

Porsche recently redesigned the 911. Fortunately, the company created a worthy successor to the 991 series with the 992. As a result, the new 911 received tons of critical praise for its athleticism and technology.

Since the new 911 arrived not too long ago, we’re sure more variants are coming down the pipeline. What are the potential models in store for Porsche enthusiasts? A hybrid could be in the cards. Additionally, we might see something akin to what YouTuber Automotive Mike spotted at the Nurburgring. The mostly uncovered 911 sported a ducktail wing. What does that mean for the 911?

Porsche 911 Sport Classic: A Possibility?

Overall, the mysterious 911 spotted testing boasts some changes. As pointed out by CarBuzz, Porsche removed the rear seats and installed a rollcage. To add fuel to the fire is an exhaust note that sounds a bit different than currently available 992 models.

However, the big news is out back. Porsche adorned this particular 911 with a ducktail wing. They also seemingly outfitted the 992 with a different bumper. And that’s the area they’ve camouflaged heavily. The question is, what exactly are we looking at? There are quite a few ways to responsibly speculate here. The simplest explanation is that the ducktail will debut as a separate option on the 992 in the near future. Another theory, as pointed out by CarBuzz and Automotive Mike, is that it’s part of a new package. That package could herald the return of the 911 Sport Classic. Porsche originally created the 911 Sport Classic for the 997 Carrera. But that was already 10 years ago. Plus, production was extremely limited. A new 992-inspired Classic would no doubt generate tons of interest and sell out quickly.

It would be nice if the ducktail is a bit less exclusive though. Potentially, that might very well happen. The previous generation model featured the Heritage Design Package on the 911 Speedster. That was an optional way to outfit a modern 911 with classic design cues. And combining aspects of the 911 Turbo with some new cosmetic and performance additions seems like a surefire way to keep costs down while creating some nice variety within the 992 lineup.

Charging Forward

Porsche stormed into 2020 with an excellent roster at their disposal. The Taycan thrilled critics and ushered in a new era for the company. And the new Cayman is an absolute delight. Similarly, the automaker now has incredibly competitive utility vehicles with few peers. Hybrids and electric vehicles may be all the rage, but it’s pretty clear Porsche can engineer groundbreaking vehicles and more traditional masterpieces simultaneously.

The new ducktail is another exciting development for the company. Although it might arrive on a successor to the 911 Sport Classic, we’re hoping it gets outfitted on something with wider availability. Clearly, the ducktail belongs on the current model. And with the 992 making waves, now would be the perfect time to reintroduce the wing. The 992 lineup already boasts such great powertrains, so there’s little need for improvement on that end. Whatever the case may be, make sure you watch the brief video of the prototype 911 on the Nurburgring. The exhaust note is quite intriguing.
