2020 Porsche Cayman GT4 Becomes Doug DeMuro’s Fave Pony
With an excellent gearbox and superb handling, DeMuro believes newest Cayman GT4 sits among giants as an all-time great.
Porsche debuted the Cayman for the 2006 model year. Roughly fifteen years later, the nameplate evolved and has grown to the point where it is a legitimately great vehicle. Additionally, the wider availability of the 4.0 liter naturally aspirated six for the 2020 has made it even more compelling. It’s traditional Porsche in the best way possible. And it seems the newest Cayman GT4 wowed at least one automotive internet personality.
Doug DeMuro recently reviewed the 2020 Porsche Cayman GT4 and declared it to be one of the best sports cars ever made. That’s extremely high praise. Overall it seems like DeMuro is a big fan of the modern Porsche lineup. Although he did have some interesting things to say about the GT4 and the type of people who visit Rennlist.
Cayman GT4 Interior Quirks
As a model primarily designed for track use, the 2020 Cayman GT4 makes some weight-saving compromises. In certain areas, at least. In others, they decided to equip the coupe with convenience features that probably could have saved substantially more weight if they were removed. It’s a balancing act that DeMuro noticed and felt compelled to talk about because he feels Porsche has largely gotten things right in that regard. “And Porsche seems to have mastered precisely the line between sporty weight savings you can charge more for and just downright annoying people,” says DeMuro.
Specifically, he pointed out that the Cayman GT4 lacks solid door handles yet contains electronic dual-zone automatic climate control. That’s an interesting juxtaposition, but more surprising is the continued inclusion of a CD player. With the proliferation of Bluetooth streaming and the inclusion of USB ports, you’d think Porsche would have already ditched support for optical discs in their track focused models. Perhaps Porsche feels owners like having the older technology in their cars. It’s a plausible assumption.
Speaking of Porsche owners, DeMuro also briefly dunked on hardcore Porsche enthusiasts. As part of his reviews, he will typically point out something interesting in the owner’s manual of whatever car he finds himself in. In this case, DeMuro encountered a maintenance supplement that featured a picture of a guy he couldn’t help lampoon. “That guy’s probably about to run inside and post on Rennlist that he had some great idea for deviated air vent slat colors,” says DeMuro. We certainly appreciate the shout-out and understand how Porsche fanatics might turn off lesser fans. Although DeMuro is himself a pretty enthusiastic supporter of Porsche.
Greatest of all Time?
DeMuro may have dunked on Porsche aficionados. But he feels the new Cayman GT4 is an instant legend. “I really believe this is one of the greatest sports cars I have ever driven in my entire life,” says DeMuro. To him, pretty much everything about the car is perfect. “The car feels like an extension of you. A go-kart, to quote cliches. But in this case those cliches are actually true,” says DeMuro. There really isn’t any shortcoming to the new Cayman, it seems. But he does have some thoughts about how it sits in the modern Porsche lineup.
For DeMuro, the Cayman’s biggest problem is that it will be overlooked by people who want to instantly purchase a 911. In fact, not only does he believe that type of thinking to be shortsighted, he also thinks that by doing so they’d be picking an inferior car. That’s precisely why he felt it necessary to dunk on hardcore Porsche enthusiasts that visit Rennlist regularly. In his opinion, those individuals are unjustifiably focused on the 911 when they should be seriously thinking about the Cayman instead. It’s an interesting perspective to say the least.
