Are the Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster Doomed?

Porsche 718

But as Five12Free notes, Porsche did have viable reasons for making the switch. And it wasn’t just due to tightening fuel economy standards here in the U.S.

“I think world market expansion was on the mind of Porsche for sure. Some of these countries have outrageous taxes on cars with larger engines. If they can’t sell these in the U.S., they did the next best thing.”

Sure enough, Semitone points out that the global focus has led to success outside of the states.

“Regardless of the U.S. sales, global sales for the 718 seem to be up 6% y/y, IIRC. 25,000 units compared to 32,000 for the 911. Doesn’t sound like it’s time for a requiem yet. The article seems to be trolling.”

So perhaps the news of the Porsche 718’s demise is a bit premature. It’s clear that we American’s aren’t huge fans of the four banger, but the rest of the world is just happy they can actually buy such a car in their market. We suspect that if Porsche would in fact offer us a flat-six option once again, all would be right with the world, no?

In the meantime, we want to know what you think! Head over here and chime in with your thoughts, and let us know if you believe that the 718 is doomed, or if this is just another case of fake news!
