Where This Porsche 356 Is Going, It Doesn’t Need Roads

No, this isn’t another freaking story about Back to the Future. This is a story about a well-traveled Porsche.

Matt Hummel didn’t even know what to do with this 356 when he found it. He bought it disassembled off of a barn-find Craigslist ad that didn’t even spell the name correctly. But after about a year of the relocated classic sitting at his place, Hummel decided it might be fun to get it running as a grocery-getter. Seriously.

That was how it started. And unlike so many enthusiasts, collectors, and gearheads out there, Hummel has continued to drive this car without a care about getting it to pristine showroom condition, or scratching it, or heaven forbid, getting it dirty. He drives it everywhere from dirt and gravel roads, through forests, and anywhere else out in the wilderness.

“I think once people wrap their heads around that this is a real Porsche, and it’s out here, you’re just so dumbfounded that you just kind of have to love it,” Hummel said, describing what it’s like to drive such a decrepit vehicle. “Kind of like a lost puppy. There’s a lot of character with it that is undeniable.”

Hummel went as far as saying that the suspension feels extremely good out on the dirt, kind of like driving “an old farm truck.”

And Hummel has one of the best ways to look at fixing up an old car like this. A 1964 VW notchback was his first car, and having to work so hard to find all the missing parts was like a fun treasure hunt that led him to sourcing from places like Burma, Thailand, and Laos. That got him more and more into cars, to the point where he has owned 15 different vintage Porsches.

Summary: Matt Hummel is the MAN. As usual, Petrolicious comes through with some absolutely fantastic film work. Especially the overhead shots, which are unbelievably beautiful, as you can see in the GIF above.
