Meet ‘Doody Brown,’ a Porsche Collector’s Favorite Ride

By -

Forget about the 930 Turbo and GT3 RS. This 1974 911 Targa holds a special place in one Porsche collector’s heart.

We all have that one special car that we love more than any other. No matter how many cars we own or have owned. And oftentimes that beloved ride isn’t the coolest, rarest, or most valuable of the bunch. No, sometimes the car we love the most is the one no one could ever pick out of a lineup. That holds especially true with the 1974 911 Targa that stars in this recent Der Faszination film.

The Porsche, affectionately known as “Doody Brown,” is part of a six-car collection that also includes two 930 Turbos, a GT3 RS, GT2 RS and a GT3. For most folks, the old Targa might get a little less attention than those stellar rides. But for this Porsche collector, it’s his hands-down favorite of the bunch.

This, despite the fact that he learned to drive a stick in a 1979 930 Turbo. The car belongs to his father, who eventually let it degrade to the point where it needed a ton of work. When he asked his son if he would simply repair the dent in the roof, he did that and a lot more. In addition to a little body work, he did a full nut and bolt restoration on the car. Now, as he says, “there’s a piece of me in there, a piece of my dad in there.”

Those memories of driving the old 930 are what planted the seeds of love for old Doody Brown. Though it may not have the same power or prestige, it does have “that smell and the nostalgia” of an air-cooled Porsche. Driving it brings back fond memories of his childhood, making him “fall in love with it more and more.” And that’s a feeling we can all relate to, no matter what others think of our choices.
